4.38 Thirsk – COEDANA (2pt win – 5/2 bet365)
COEDANA has been beaten at relatively short odds in her three runs to date (15-8, 3-1 and 9-4) though clocked a fast time when third to Ghaiyya in a 1m4f Thirsk maiden on her latest assignment and that form has been boosted by the winner who has since won Chester handicaps off marks of 77 and 81. Runner-up Brielle went one better in a Hamilton novice on her next start and ran with credit at York on her handicap debut last week, finishing an 18-1 sixth of 13 to Cape Flora off a mark of 81. Ed Bethell’s filly makes her handicap debut off 74 today and looks a likely improver for the step up to 1m6f. Her trainer is 17 from 65 with handicap newcomers aged three and upwards for a profit of £16.84 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 11.55, A/E = 1.47).
5.18 Fontwell – JET SMART (2pt win – 11/8 generally)
JET SMART failed to score in eight starts for David Pipe, but his career took off when joining the Summerbsy yard, winning eight point-to-points before a successful return to Rules action at Worcester in mid-June where he scored comfortably in a fast time at odds of 11-1 (2m4f, good). He followed up in similar fashion over the same trip at Uttoxeter when a selection in this column, looking like he’d improve for a longer distance, and today’s 3m2f trip looks ideal.
8.00 Newcastle – BLAZING SON (1pt e/w – 11/2 bet365)
BLAZING SON has form figures on Tapeta of 13124123 (4-9), with the fourth place by a length when doing second best of the prominent racers. Bryan Smart’s veteran will be suited by the return to the all-weather after two comprehensive defeats on turf this season – a 14th of 15 finish at Haydock and a 50-1 ninth of 12 at Doncaster. The first of those runs was better than it looked as he got involved in a fierce battle for the early lead in a race set up for the closers. He’s yet to race beyond 6f on the all-weather but he won over tonight’s 7f trip on turf at Carlisle last summer and looks the sole pace angle in this 14-runner contest (the wind isn’t forecast to be very strong either – 7mph, gusting to 14lb and perhaps half across rather than into their faces as it usually is at Newcastle).
