1.50 Goodwood – TEMPORIZE (1pt win – 6/1 bet365, William Hill)
TEMPORIZE can usually be relied upon to run his race at this time of year – his four wins have come between July 11 and August 4 – and he made all in a 2m handicap at Newbury just 13 days ago, holding on gamely to score by a head. Syd Hosie’s five-year-old landed this 2m4.5f handicap last season and his full record in July/August stands at 113726211 (4-9) for a profit of £27.25 to a £1 level stake at SP (he has failed to score in 12 starts outside of this period), improving to 211 (2-3) since his debut for Hosie, with the defeat by a head. He’s obviously been laid out for this again and looks sure to run a big race. Much has been made of his handicap mark – 10lb higher than last year – but he’s only 3lb higher than Newbury and still has the potential for improvement, this being just his 22nd career start and ninth for his current yard. There’s not a huge amount of early pace on here, despite the big field, and he should be able to do his own thing.
2.25 Goodwood – LEAD ARTIST (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill) & SOCIALITE (1pt win – 15/2 bet365)
There are two runners that interest me in the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes – SOCIALITE and LEAD ARTIST. This pair clashed in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket last month and though only fourth, Socialite did well to finish just under four lengths behind winner Al Musmak after blasting off down the middle of the track and racing alone (the other five runners raced far side) on his first start at today’s 1m trip. The son of Too Darn Hot was two from two over 7f before that effort and the switch to a turning track for the first time could help him to settle better in front from his handy drawn in stall 2. LEAD ARTIST (stall 1) is well berthed to track likely pace angle Socialite and stall 1 has been responsible for five of the last ten winners of this contest. Stall 1 runners who started at single-figure odds were five from seven in the same period and the return to a turning track could suit the Gosden’s colt. He was underwhelming at Newmarket last time, but the ground was slower than ideal and the pair that beat him had better track position, racing closer to the far side rail.
3.35 Goodwood – DESPERATE HERO (1pt ew – 14/1 bet365, 12/1 generally)
DESPERATE HERO didn’t quite see out the stiff 5f on soft ground at Sandown last time, weakening into third in the final stages, but that run certainly suggests that he’s capable of scoring in Group company. Jack Channon’s four-year-old was hugely impressive in landing a good-ground Hamilton Class 2 handicap by four and a half lengths on his penultimate start, a race that threw up a host of winners, and the quicker ground will suit. He has the best of the draw in stall 1 and has run well here before, landing a Class 2 handicap on heavy ground – way slower than preferred – and doing third best of the disadvantage near side group when seventh of 11 on unsuitably soft going at this meeting last term.
