2.15 Carlisle – SANDS OF SPAIN (1pt win – 7/2 bet365, BetVictor, 888sport)
Andrew Balding’s SANDS OF SPAIN was only eighth of 11 at Goodwood on his debut but missed a beat at the start and ran very green. That run is easily excused, and his trainer has a fine record with second time out juveniles, scoring with 63 of the 345 qualifiers (18.3%) since the beginning of 2020 for a profit of £144.06 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 55.15, A/E = 1.14). His half-brother Storm Call won on his second career start and his stall 9 of 10 draw could prove helpful as they were coming across to the centre/stands’ side here last night.
4.40 Brighton – ENGLISH SPIRIT (0.5pt e/w – 9/1 bet365, 8/1 888sport, 15/2 generally)
ENGLISH SPIRIT was only seventh of 13 in a 1m apprentice handicap at Newbury last time but was ridden up with the pace in a race set up for the late closers. Third-placed Newfangled, best of those to race towards the front end, won at Windsor next time and it was a solid effort in the circumstances. Heather Main’s veteran drops down to Class 6 level for the first time since his Wolverhampton win off a mark of 62 last October and is 1lb lower here. All five of his wins have come on the all-weather (he’s 0-16 on turf) but his two runs here produced a 5-1 half-length second of 13 and a 16-1 fourth of 13 (beaten less than three lengths), both in Class 4 company. His sole previous turf run in Class 6 company resulted in an 18-1 third of 13 at Leicester (beaten by three-quarters of a length and doing best of the front-runners). He was withdrawn from an intended run here three days ago because of the overnight rain but it’s been largely dry since. JOHNJAY doesn’t find winning easy, but he caught the eye when third at Chepstow last time when challenging widest of all on the slowest part of the track and is worth a saver.
4.50 Carlisle – NAVAL ACADEMY (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
NAVAL ACADEMY was only fifth at Leicester last time but got going too late from off the pace, a track that rarely favours patient tactics. The winner, Delicacy, also arrived late and he followed up at York. The runner-up and sixth, the only two beaten horses from that race to run since, both made the frame next time and the form looks solid. His reappearance sixth of ten over an inadequate 6f at Thirsk worked out well (the second, fourth and nine have won since) and he ran well third time out last term, finishing second by a neck off a 10lb higher mark than today’s when 16-1 at Pontefract.
