1.47 Wetherby – HIGH DANCER (1pt win – 9/4 generally)
Horses that have recently left James Ewartt’s care have been doing well for their new trainers, with four winners from 14 runners on this angle since the beginning of 2024. Backing them blind at SP would have returned a profit of £36.63 thanks to winners at 40-1, 7-2, 15-8 and 5-4. Three more finished second (14-1, 12-1 and 3-1) and three more also made the frame (25-1 fourth, 5-1 third and 7-4 fourth). HIGH DANCER was sold for £95,000 after winning an Irish point-to-point in May 2024 and showed useful form for Ewart, recording form figures of 34B12 (1-5), with the win over 2m5f in a good-ground maiden hurdle at Haydock. The five-year-old only went down by half a length in a handicap hurdle over the extended 2m6f at Kelso last time and looks very interesting on his debut for Nicky Richards.
3.12 Down Royal – SOMEONE’S WISH (1pt win – 6/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power, 888sport, 11/2 generally)
The Gordon Elliott-trained SOMEONE’S WISH has a good record at this time of year, and his Downpatrick handicap hurdle success three weeks ago took his record in September/October, over the sticks or on the all-weather, to 11131 (4-5) for a profit of £18.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. I didn’t make him a recommended bet in this column last time as the 245-day absence was a concern, but it didn’t stop him from scoring by two and a half lengths at odds of 6-1. The runner-up/third have let the form down, but I still want to support him to small stakes in this handicap chase, a race in which he finished second by a half a length last year when the stable second string according to the betting.
4.10 Southwell – DANCE TIME (0.5pt e/w – 12/1 bet365, 11/1 generally)
DANCE TIME caught the eye when a 22-1 second of 13 at Chester last month, going down by five lengths but doing well to finish so close under a patient ride from stall 12 (non-runner adjusted). The winner made all from stall 1 that day and the third home, Swinging London, was an all-weather winner at the next time of asking. David Loughnane’s mare could only finish 14th of 16 at York next time but was up in class and started at 25-1, a run that took her turf score to 0-10. Her all-weather record below Class 4 level, when not wearing headgear, stands at 12521331321 (4-11), including Southwell figures if 12132 (2-5).
