2.20 Ascot – LADY MARIKO (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally, Sky Bet paying six places)

LADY MARIKO caught the eye when a 66-1 fifth of 18 in the 7f fillies’ handicap at York’s Ebor meeting where she challenged on the slowest part of the track. That form has received a few boosts – notably the subsequent wins from runner-up Maybe Not, 11th placed Dash Of Azure and 13th home Eternal Sunshine – and Dylan Cunha’s three-year-old followed that with a solid 12-1 third of ten behind the progressive Sunlit Uplands at Sandown, the first time she encountered soft ground. She failed to stay a mile in the mud when returned to Sandown a few days later and, given her patient running style. A straight 7f in this amateur riders’ handicap – these races are usually run at a strong pace – should be right up here street. Fletcher Yarham (12 from 78 in handicaps, +£14.73 to a £1 stake at Betfair SP), is a positive booking.

4.40 Ascot – SONDAD (1pt e/w – 5/1 generally with the firms paying four places) & RIGHTTHERE RIGHTNOW (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 Sky Bet and Paddy Power, 16/1 generally)

The form of last month’s Ayr Silver Cup, run in a fast time, is working out well, with third-placed Eye Of Dubai scoring at Ripon, fourth home Aberama Gold placing again in the Sprint Series Final at Nottingham yesterday and the eighth/ninth – Rousing Encore and Lord Bertie  – finishing one-two when returned to Ayr earlier this week (7-2 and 8-1, Tote Exacta paid £38.70). Today, t’s the turn of Silver Cup second SONDAD and fifth-placed RIGHTHERE RIGHTNOW, and I’m happy to support both. Mick Easterby’s Sondad now has form figures of 1122 (2-4) over today’s 6f trip since visored and his patient style will be an asset given the strong wind, likely to be half into their faces in the straight at Ascot today. Righthere Rightnow, a stablemate of Silver Cup winner Candy, fared second best of the three-year-olds at Ayr and second best of the near side group. He’s now 0-6 since making a winning debut at Newmarket last summer but looks over-priced.

8.30 Dundalk – ENOLA HOLMES (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 Sky Bet, four places, 28/1 generally, three places)

ENOLA HOLMES showed good form on the all-weather for Jack Jones when joining the Newmarket handler this year – landing a 6f Wolverhampton maiden in impressive fashion at odds of 12-1 and going down by a nose under a penalty when 8-13 favourite over the same track and trip next time. That run was followed by a 40-1 fourth in a 7f Listed race at Lingfield and a respectable 125-1 sixth of 15 when switched to turf for the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury. She lost her way after that run but the 35,000gns move to Stephen Thorne could revitalise the daughter of Invincible Spirit, as could the application of a first-time tongue-tie. Her sire’s progeny have a 15 from 69 record in this headgear on the all-weather (+£38.25 to a £1 level stake at SP) and, while we might be getting there a race too early (her yard has a shorter-priced stablemate in opposition in this 7f fillies and mares handicap) I can’t resist a small interest.
