2.42 Haydock – HEDGE FUND (1pt win – 12/1 bet365)
HEDGE FUND was sent off as the 100-30 favourite at Pontefract in late April when making his debut for Mick Appleby, but he trailed home an 11-length last of nine after racing keenly in the lead and doing far too much too soon. The four-year-old has been rested since and looks interesting now fitted with a first-time hood, a profitable angle for his trainer albeit the female qualifiers do better than the males. Both his wins for William Muir & Chris Grassick came in September (admittedly both in very small fields) but he’s worth chancing to bounce out and make all.
4.40 Ascot – THUNDER ROAR (1pt e/w – 12/1 bet365, five places)
THUNDER ROAR, pulled out of an intended engagement at Chester last week on account of fast going, has his preferred underfoot conditions today. Tony Coyle and Kaine Wood’s six-year-old is very consistent in the September/October period, recording form figures of 231124221 (3-9) with the three wins coming on officially soft or heavy going. He’s also entered in the big 7f handicap here on Saturday, though has stall 1 in that contest and is in stall 18 of 18 today which could prove to be advantageous.
5.00 Worcester – JET SMART (1.5pt win – 11/4 bet365)
JET SMART made it two from two since returned to racing under rules when making much of the running to land a 2m4f handicap chase at Uttoxeter on July 16th, doing this column a favour in the process. Dean Summersby’s seven-year-old, an eight-time winner between the flags, now has form figures over regulation fences of 2P11 (2-4), with the non-completion likely on account of the soft going. He’s going to improve for the step up to 2m7f here and looks a strong bet if the rain stays away (he was scratched on account of good to soft at Fontwell the other day). A dry day is forecast but if they do get rain, I’m trusting his connections to declare him a non-runner again.

Andrew Mount On…Ballydoyle Jockeys – Does Ryan Moore’s Injury Provide A Betting Opportunity?
Ryan Moore has been ruled out for the remainder of the Flat turf season with a broken leg, and I want to use this week’s article to discuss how his absence might affect Aidan O’Brien’s operation in the next few months, especially with the runners at British racecourses.
