7.05 Newmarket – SPRING BLOOM (1pt e/w – 7/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
SPRING BLOOM (stall 6 of 14) got the better of DASHING DICK (main danger) by a head when the pair finished one-two in this 6f handicap 12 months ago and Robert Eddery’s veteran can again emerge on top. The gelding tends to come good at this time of year and has landed three of his eight starts in August (placed at 22-1, 6-1 and 9-2 in three of the others) and his 6f record in August reads 211 (2-3), with the defeat by half a length when never quite able to reel in the all-the-way winning favourite at Epsom back in 2021. Two of his three non-August wins came in July and the presence of old rival Dashing Dick (a regular front-runner) in the next-door stall (7) as well as other pace angles GUNFIGHTER (stall 3) and ANGEL SHARED (stall 1) should ensure a decent gallop and suggests that he’s drawn on the right half of the track as there’s little in the way of early pace among those drawn middle-to-high. Despite facing competition for the early lead, Dashing Dick, who won this race two years ago, looks the one for the forecast.
7.40 Newmarket – LADY MARIKO (1pt win – 15/8 generally)
LADY MARIKO has improved since joining Dylan Cunha from the Crisfords, recording a good Proform speed figure when scoring by a neck over 7f at left-handed Wetherby and proving her effectiveness on straight tracks when following up at Yarmouth. She won with far more in hand than the one-length margin suggested last time and a 6lb rise to 75 is unlikely trouble one who could be a 90-rated filly.
