7.10 Windsor – UNDER THE TWLIGHT (1pt ew – 20/1 Betfair, Paddy Power, 16/1 generally, each-way terms may vary)
This 6f Class 2 handicap, the Sprint Series Final, shines brightly among a sea of mediocrity on Monday and I think I’ve found a good bet at a big price. Fillies and mares have a good record in this contest, and I like the looks of the Michael Blake-trained UNDER THE TWILIGHT, who rarely encounters the required strong pace when competing against her own sex. The six-year-old arrived late when recording a 14-1 course and distance success against male rivals on her reappearance in mid-April to take her record in fields of 12 or more runners to 4013139211 (4-10) for a profit of £42.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, including form figures of 13211 (3-5) over 6f only for her current trainer (+£36.00). The third place came at odds of 22-1 in a field of 18 at Newbury last spring when best of those to come from off the pace and the runner-up effort, this time at 7-1, came by just three-quarters of a length over course and distance last summer when again doing best of the closers. She should get a good tow into the race from Stewards’ Cup winner Get It and will cope with the fast ground. I’d have liked to see another front-runner or three in opposition in this 16-runner line-up but plenty of these have been campaigned with this final in mind and might be ridden more prominently than in their last two or three starts. Throw in two rivals in first-time headgear – three-year-olds (who have a poor record in the race) Elmonjed and Equity Law – and we can hope that the pace will take care of itself.
