Archie Watson has a poor record when using first-time cheekpieces, scoring with just 27 of the 288 qualifiers (9.4% strike-rate) for a massive loss of £180.31 to a £1 level stake at SP. The expected number of winners, judged by their odds, was 39.66, giving a WAX (winners above expected score) of -12.66 and an actual over expected figure (A/E) of 0.68 (anything below zero is poor). VERY MINDFUL, runner-up on both previous starts (3-1 and 5-2), takes a big chunk out of the market and can be opposed in the first-time headgear. The other three runners with previous experience don’t look to be anything special and the betting angle is to side with the James Owen-trained newcomer FLYING MACS. Owen is five from 32 with newcomers on the Flat (+£52.25 to a £1 level stake at SP), with the fillies contributing three wins from 11 starts (+£42.00). One of those was Social Exclusion, like Flying Macs a daughter of Lope De Vega, who made a winning debut on Tapeta at Southwell last month, beating one of today’s runners, 8-13 favourite MUSEUM PIECE, into second place.
7.55 Wolverhampton – SNOOZE LANE (1pt win – 7/1 bet365)
Four-time course winner SNOOZE LANE finished last of nine in an 8.6f handicap here on February 10th when we last saw him, but that race was run in a very fast time for the grade and it worked out exceptionally well, with five of the seven beaten to run since all scoring at the next time of asking. His last three wins have come over tonight’s longer 9.4f trip in the spring and he now runs off a 6lb lower mark than for his latest success. Gina Mangan has yet to click on Steph Hollinshead’s six-year-old, failing to win on him from eight attempts, and is now replaced by David Probert. He rocks up here with the second-best last time out Proform speed figure and is worth chancing despite the lack of obvious pace angles to two him along in this ten-runner line-up.
