4.10 Ayr – BALERMINO (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power)
BALMERINO hinted at ability when mid-division at best in three maidens over 7f last year and can be forgiven his reappearance eighth of 11 over 1m1f at Carlisle in late May, as he started at 250-1 in novice company and was ridden patiently when it paid to race up with the pace. He wasn’t given a handicap mark after his three runs as a juvenile but has been granted an opening mark of 59 and looks interesting on his handicap debut now back at 7f with his yard in fine form. Lucinda Russell is five from 14 in the past fortnight, including four from her last six and four of the five winners came on the Flat.
4.40 Ayr – SPIORADALTA (1pt e/w – 5/1 bet365, 9/2 generally)
SPIORADALTA has twice run well in Class 4 company since May’s Class 5 Ripon victory, clocking a good speed figure when third to Gincident at Beverley last time where emerging clear best of those to come from off the pace. Papagei, who trailed home an 11-elngth last of eight in that 1m2f Beverley handicap, went close at Salisbury next time and Spioradlata was over eight lengths clear of that rival. Mark Walford’s five-year-old finished a 9-1 third on his only previous trip to Ayr and his full record in Class 5 handicaps reads 114041 (3-6), with the ‘duck egg’ excusable as he raced closer to the early pace than ideal under a 5lb claimer when visored for the first time.
