2.12 Brighton – JOYCEAN WAY (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 Ladbrokes, Coral, both paying four places)
Brighton is going to be fun and games today as the ground is very soft, bringing the stands’ side rail into play (it was a big advantage to race there at the last meeting) but those who get to the rail first could be in trouble given the forecast very strong wind (headwind, but perhaps only half across rather than a full-on headwind). Throw apprentice jockeys into the mix and this opening 1m handicap could provide the usual dose of in-running carnage. JOYCEAN WAY is a 12-race maiden but looks worth small each-way interest. Gary & Josh Moore’s four-year-old’s best efforts have come on soft ground, he’s habitually ridden patiently and stall 15 of 15 should ensure that he doesn’t stray too far from the rail.
8.00 Kempton – KINGDOM OF STARS (1pt win – 7/2 bet365, William Hill)
Sax Appeal heads the market at a best-priced 5-4 for this five-runner 2m handicap on the back of last month’s victory on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface but Charlie Johnston’s five-year-old is 0-10 on Polytrack, recording form figures of 7869399734. The best of those efforts came at Chelmsford, and he has finished unplaced in his two runs at tonight’s venue. Second favourite KINGDOM OF STARS finished well beaten behind Sax Appeal at Newcastle last time, but he raced keenly in first-tome headgear (dispensed with today) and is best judged on his course record and distance record of 421 (1-3), with the defeats by a length and a half and just half a length.
