5.10 Newcastle – POPTY PING (1pt win – 11/4 bet354)
This 1m Class 6 nursery won’t take a great deal of winning and the only horse who has matched the class par speed figure for this type of race (according to Proform’s figures) is David O’Meara’s POPTY PING. The daughter of Ardad is a seven-race maiden but has run some good races at this venue, finishing a 28-1 second in a 7f maiden to the 77-rated Kanishka, sixth of 13 to Fanjove in a 7f nursery on September 30th that is working out well (the seventh and eighth won next time out, while the four-length runner-up only went down by half a length on his next outing) and a best-of-the-closers third in a 1m nursery. Cheekpieces go on for the first time and her trainer’s record with all-weather handicappers in this headgear stands at ten winners from 52 runners for a profit of £37.92 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 5.93, A/E = 1.69)
6.10 Newcastle – COACHELLO (1pt win – 20/1 bet365)
COACHELLO found the company too hot when down the field in the Ayr Silver Cup last month, but that race has worked out well, with five of the 19 runners to have raced since winning at the next time of asking (+£25.50 to a £1 level stake at SP). Mark Loughnane’s seven-year-old has a good all-weather strike-rate (five from 14 including his French form) and he made a successful switch from turf to the all-weather to score off a mark of 92 in a Class 3 handicap at Wolverhampton last December – the last time he ran on the all-weather in this grade. He also made a winning turf to sand switch at about this time of year in 2023 (when trained by Gordon Elliott) and he runs off just 89 this evening.
7.10 Newcastle – DANDY DINMONT (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 bet365) & OPAL STORM (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365)
There’s plenty of pace in this 5f handicap and though the forecast wind is not as strong as it could be it’s still into their faces and the race could be set up for a closer. The consistent DANDY DINMONT has finished in the first four in eight of his last ten starts and this sometimes-keen sort looked like he’d appreciate the return to the minimum trip when a 12-1 third of 13 in a 6f handicap here last time out. The six-year-old has course form figures of 1222843 (1-7) his stall 8 of 10 draw could be an asset.
The other interesting one is OPAL STORM (stall 7), a three-time turf winner over the minimum trip on stiff tracks who has shaped well in her two runs on the all-weather this autumn, finishing a close-up 40-1 fourth over 6f here before a respectable 33-1 eighth of 14 over track and trip. Her latest effort might have been needed after a break of just over six weeks, and she would have been closer but for being squeezed out at the start. Her record in 5f Class 5 handicaps when returned to the track within five weeks of her latest start stands at 12145251624 (3-11) and she should be finishing to good effect.
