2.15 Catterick – STAR START (1pt win – 8-1 888sport, 15-2 generally)
STAR START got into a fierce four-way battle for the early lead when fourth to MADE ALL in another amateur riders’ handicap over course and distance three runs back and provided this column with half a winner when dead-heating at Beverley next time. Ruth Carr’s five-year-old backed that up with a win over course expert UNPLUGGED (who also reopposes today) at Pontefract. He arrived late when scoring at Pontefract but a return to forcing tactics could be on the cards in a race featuring mostly hold-up horses and he can complete his hat-trick. I’ve saved on the MADE ALL/STAR START forecast.
3.45 Catterick – ALTHER WALDEN (1.5pt win – 11-4 Spreadex, 5-2 generally)
ALTHER WALDEN was too green to do himself justice when a seven-and-a-half length second to the Gosden’s 1-7 favourite Competizione on his debut at Windsor last month and that form was boosted when Hachiman, almost four lengths further back in third, won at odds of 11-2 at Lingfield next time. Eighth-placed Typeface won his next two (33-1 and 7-2) and Arther Walden subsequent Nottingham fifth can be excused as he did too much too soon in a race set up for the closers. That form has also been boosted – the winner and fourth scored at the next time of asking – and the step up to 1m4f will suit on breeding.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
