3.39 Redcar – HELTER SKELTER (1pt win – 3/1 Paddy Power, 11/4 Betfair)
HELTER SKELTER was a big eyecatcher when a 22-1 sixth of 18 in the Spring Mile at Doncaster last time, taking up the running sooner than ideal into the headwind and hanging badly left to the far side rail. The Rebecca Menzies-trained four-year-old traded at 3.1 in running from a Betfair SP of 30.0 and will be happier back at 7f, especially with a rail to his left (he’s drawn in stall 3 – usually a good draw at Redcar). His trainer does well with those running in The Horse Watchers colours, scoring with seven of the 27 qualifiers for a profit of £11.75 to a £1 level stake at SP.
4.38 Wolverhampton – REPUTATION (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
Ruth Carr has her string in good form and REPUTATION suggested that his turn was near when third in a 7f handicap at Chelmsford last month, doing best of those to come from off the pace. The veteran ran third at 33-1 from the worst of the draw (stall 12 of 12) over 7f at Wolverhampton on his penultimate start and though poorly drawn again for his return to that course and distance this afternoon, he looks sure to go well granted a strong gallop (I’m expecting Gordonstoun to put plenty of pace to the race). He clocked a fast time for the Chelmsford run and the form was given a boost when the fifth went close back at Chelmsford on his next start.
4.40 Kempton – HIERONYMOUS (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)
Dragon Icon has obvious claims now back at his optimum 1m trip, but he’s priced accordingly, and the value play is HIERONYMOUS (stall 1), who could get loose on the lead. George Baker’s eight-year-old scored gamely from the front over course and distance on his penultimate start and can be forgiven his 15th of 20 in the Lincoln as he blasted off into the headwind and was an 80-1 shot.
