2.52 Pontefract – BOLSTER (1pt win – 15/2 BetVictor, Sky Bet)
There’s not much in the way of pace in this 1m2f handicap and BOLSTER, who has the best of the draw in stall 1 based on the evidence of Pontefract’s opening meeting, might be able to dominate. The four-year-old was a winner at Leicester in October 2022 on his sole juvenile outing and also scored at the first time of asking last year. He struggled in both subsequent starts, but they came on good to firm going, the first of them in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. He’s switched yards (Crisfords to Karl Burke) over the winter and, while the ground will be the softest he has encountered, he looks worth chancing.
4.45 Windsor – ON EDGE (1.5pt win – 7/1 generally)
ON EDGE was beaten by just over six lengths when a 12-1 third of 12 on soft ground in this race last year but that was a good effort given his wide draw (stall 10 of 12, once adjusted for non-runners) and the easy winner, Big Bard, went on to land two of his next three starts. The ground would have been softer than ideal too and his only subsequent course and distance outing saw him win well backed on good ground from stall 2 of 15 in October. Christopher Mason’s six-year-old does seem best when drawn near a running rail and his last three wins have come when berthed within two stalls of the fence. He’s in stall 1 of 9 this afternoon and can defy a break of 149 days with the ground in his favour.
