1.55 Kempton – JIMMY HUDSTROM (1pt win – 11/4 generally) & GETALEAD (1pt win – 9/1 generally)
Tom Lacey is an unusual trainer in that his runners show a good profit in handicap hurdles, despite these being then most competitive and hard to win races. Backing the yard’s handicap hurdlers blind would have 155 winners from 726 bets (21.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £123.30 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 123.28, A/E = 1.26) and that was before Luttrell Lad’s 12-1 victory at Exeter yesterday. Throw in the proviso that the qualifiers must have had one of the top five last time out speed figures (according to Proform’s ratings) and the score is 117 from 443 (26.4%) for a profit of £145.05. Point-to-point winner JIMMY HURDSTROM is the latest qualifier and looks worth a bet now upped in trip to 3m on his handicap hurdle debut after his latest fourth in a 2m4f Class 3 maiden contest at Aintree. That was strong form for the grade with runner-up Big Ticket running second in a Class 2 novice at Ascot on Saturday and third-placed Tiddesley Wood scoring at Windsor yesterday. The five-year-old’s earlier Fontwell second to Fresh Perspective has been franked by the winner and his opening mark of 119 looks fair enough.
GETALEAD could only finish a seven-length 12-1 fourth of eight when I recommended him at Warwick last time but, with the benefit of hindsight, that run – his first since July 1st and first since a wind operation – was probably needed and he can be expected to do better today, Kevin Pickard’s nine-year-old has a fine overall record in the autumn, recording form figures in the September to November period of 2594211111611814 (8-16) for a profit of £42.20 to a £1 level stake at SP.
2.40 Ludlow – DESPEREAUX (1pt win – 13/8 generally)
DESPEREAUX clearly appreciated the return to a right-handed track when finishing a 10-1 third of 16 under topweight in a 3m1f handicap hurdle at Huntingdon earlier this month. Jane Williams’ six-year-old emerged best of those to race up with the early pace and now has form figures this way round of 131073481143 (4-12) for a profit of £9.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (he’s 0-11 when racing left-handed). The six-year-old won by almost four lengths on his latest visit to right-handed Ludlow and only 2lb higher this afternoon.
