2.50 Redcar – NAVAL ACADEMY (1pt win – 4/1 generally)
There’s no guarantee that the stands’ side ‘golden highway’, evident at the last Redcar meeting, will be functioning again today (with the stalls in the centre, they could elect to go across to the far side rail) but I still want an interest on NAVAL ACADEMY from stall 12. Mark Walford’s five-year-old was only fifth at Leicester last time but got going too late from off the pace, a track that rarely favours patient tactics. The winner, Delicacy, also arrived late and he followed up at York. The runner-up and sixth, the only two beaten horses from that race to run since, both made the frame next time and the form looks solid. His reappearance sixth of ten over an inadequate 6f at Thirsk worked out well (the second, fourth and nine have won since) and he ran well third time out last term, finishing second by a neck off a 10lb higher mark than today’s when 16-1 at Pontefract.
3.55 Windsor – NATIVE WARRIOR (1pt win – 15/8 888sport, 7/4 generally)
NATIVE WARRIOR deservedly heads the market for this 1m handicap and although the price looks nothing special ta first glance, he’s worth a punt as the ground looks likely being too quick for second favourite ALPHA CRUCIS. Karl Burke’s four-year-old found only Mickley (a subsequent scorer in Hong Kong) and Skukua (a winner at the Curragh on Saturday when tipped on GG’s Weekend Watch) too good when a 22-1 third of 29 in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer and he was too keen in the lead when a three-quarters of a length second over 1m1f at Goodwood next time when the winner/third both came from off the pace. Gelded over the winer, he was sent off at 11-1 for the Lincoln at Doncaster on his reappearance but raced on the front end into the headwind and helped to set up the race for the closers, weakening into ninth of 22 (six of the first seven home came from well in rear). Fellow front-runner and stablemate Thunder Run finished back in 15th place, and he came out to win at York earlier this month, while Two Tempting, who also ran well against the bias, has won since. Native Warrior was only scored once from eight career starts but won’t get many opportunities better than this.
7.00 Ballinrobe – TULLYBEG (1pt win – 6/1 bet365, 11/2 generally)
TULLYBEG pulled up at the Punchestown festival on his latest start, but he was 40-1 for a valuable Listed handicap chase on his return from a long absence and that has never been his track. Gordon Elliott’s ten-year-old drops into veterans’ handicap chase company for the first time and likes today’s venue, landing the Listed Mayo National back in 2023 at odds of 12-1 and finishing a respectable 11-1 fifth of 16 behind stablemate Duffle Coat last year, doing best of those to come from well in rear. His record immediately following a run at Punchestown reads 1411 (3-4) and the return to this venue can spark a revival.

Andrew’s Angles – Why the London Gold Cup Can Be a Group Race Springboard
There’s a cracking meeting at Newbury on Saturday where the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes takes centre stage. I want to use this week’s column to discuss one of the supporting races – the 1m2f London Gold Cup Handicap. This heritage handicap has often been a springboard to Group-race glory, as we can see from the…
