2.30 Ayr – GISELLES IZZY (2pt win – 13/2 888sport, 6/1 generally)
This 6f handicap looks very playable as 3-1 second favourite HAVANA RUM, one I tipped when he was second by a head at Hamilton last month, is proving difficult to win with and has now lost 14 on the bounce. DANZAN, the 5-2 favourite, is hardly bombproof either. Tim Easterby’s ten-year-old won over course and distance last time when the slow ground was in his favour but his trainer’s last time out winners often struggle to follow up and his three previous wins for his current handler were followed by form figures of 077 (0-3). Also, he raced up with the pace from a high draw in that Ayr race which looked a big advantage (the first three home were described as “led narrowly on near side of group”, “prominent on near side of group” and “prominent on far side of group”). I’d rather side with GISELLES IZZY, a winner over 7f here on her penultimate start. Iain Jardine’s mare was only third of six behind Jannas Journey when 9-4 favourite at Hamilton on her latest start but the time was more than respectable, and the winner followed up four days later. Fourth-placed Superior Council found only one too good at Newcastle when 7-1 at Newcastle on Saturday night to further boost the form, while runner-up Rain Cap has just crossed the line in front at Pontefract (4.55 Sunday).
8.30 Southwell – DESTINADO (1pt win – 9/2 bet365, 4/1 generally)
DESTINADO was only fifth of the seven runners in an amateur riders’ handicap at Catterick last time but paid for racing close to the unsustainably strong early pace, racing four wide into the first bend. The first three home were in the last three positions on turning in and it’s safe to ignore that effort. The seven-year-old is most effective when ridden patiently off a decent gallop and, since joining his current trainer, he’s won nine of his 24 starts in fields of ten or more runners for a profit of £55.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.61, A/E = 3.45). His record under these conditions at Southwell reads 11301 (3-5), with the ‘duck egg’ when 33-1. There’s pace on from stalls 7, 5 and 1 (perhaps stall 10 also) in this 11-runner contest and it should be run to suit.
