2.15 Ayr – PASTORAL WAY (1pt win – 4/1 generally)
I’m keen to take on 2-1 joint-favourite Harswell Dandy in this 5f restricted maiden as the Fell & Murray-trained filly looked flattered by her debut 40-1 second at Pontefract where she had the best of the draw in stall 1 and was always prominent on the fastest strip of ground. Charlie Johnston’s newcomer Zabeel Road, the other 2-1 joint-favourite, could well be the one but I’d rather side with David O’Meara’s PASTORAL WAY, fifth in Harswell Dandy’s Pontefract race. Slowly away and green that day, he was always trapped out wide and his yard does very well with second-time out two-year-olds in April, scoring with five of the 11 qualifiers for a profit of £22.90 to a £1 level stake at SP.
6.30 Wolverhampton – STAR PUPIL (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
STAR PUPIL was sent off at just 6-1 for his debut over 1m at Kempton in mid-December but didn’t last home after showing early speed in a race won by his 50-1 stablemate Arcturian (winner again since) in a fast time and the three-year-old was the eye-catchiest of eyecatchers when just over two lengths back in fifth place (16-1) in a 6f novice contest earlier this month. The son of Zoustar was in no hurry out of the stalls and was restrained in rear on the inside rail by George Rooke. He started making headway towards the far rail just over two out, but his jockey never picked up his stick, leaving the firm impression that he could have finished closer under a more vigorous ride. The obvious conclusion to draw from that run was that he’d be of more interest when handicapping but tonight’s race looks there for the taking and he’s worth a small interest.
