2.40 Ripon – PEARL FORTUNE (1.5pt win – 13/8 bet365, 888sport)
The Karl Burke-trained PEARL FORTUNE clocked a fast time when scoring by five lengths at Beverley on her debut last month (Proform awarded her the third-best 5f newcomers speed rating in the past ten years, including colts and geldings) and looks value to follow up against two other previous winners in this 6f fillies’ novice contest. Main market rival ROGUE TEMPATATION may have been flattered under a prominent ride when scoring at Haydock on her second outing and the form was let down when the runner-up and third were beaten in the same nursery at the weekend. Burke has a fine record with second-time out two-year-olds, scoring with 129 of the 605 qualifiers (21.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £159.98 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 100.55, A/E = 1.28). So far this year, the score is 11 from 27 (40.7%) for a profit of £21.18.
5.10 Windsor – PINKARIZON (1pt win – 14/1 bet365, 888sport)
The flag start races at Ffos Las on June 29th have been worth following, with six winners from 31 runners for a profit of £52.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those included Popeye Doyle who was advised in this column when successful at Wolverhampton on July 22nd after being supported from the overnight 14-1 into 15-8 favouritism. Today we get the chance to back the Warren Greatrex-trained PINKARIZON, beaten by less than four lengths into a 10-1 fifth of ten in a 1m handicap at that meeting. The 12-1 winner was always prominent, taking up the running over three furlongs out, whereas Pinkarizon was described by the Racing Post as “slowly away, in rear early, midfield after 3f, outpaced from over 2f out, ran on inside final furlong”. She has failed to beat a rival in two previous handicap runs over tonight’s 1m2f trip but the first of those came when racing prominently at Goodwood in a race run to suit the closers and the other on her seasonal debut when in need of the outing. Softer ground would suit but they’ve water at Windsor (when don’t they?) and rain is forecast.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
