2.30 Ripon – LASTCHANCEZOULOON (1.5pt win – 5/1 bet365)
There was a very strong draw bias in sprints at Haydock on July 4th and the first three home in the 6f fillies’ maiden were drawn in stalls 1, 3 and 2 of nine. They split into two distinct group with only four runners, including the first three home, going across to the far side. Richard Fahey’s LASTCHANCEZOULOON fared best of the larger near side group in a 14-1 fourth and though beaten by 11 lengths, the 15-length sixth, Raison d’Etre, came out to win at odds of 13-2 at Windsor next time and the 32-length eighth Nad Alshiba Green, bolted up at Bath on her next outing. Fahey saddles two others in this race, one of whom (Lovely Spirit) is forecast to start at half the odds of Lastchancezouloon (4-1 as opposed to 8-1) but the form of that one’s course and distance third doesn’t look very strong and she’s already had two runs.
2.50 Naas – DEVILS ANGEL (1pt win – 25/1 Paddy Power/Betfair)
DEVILS ANGEL used to run best at this time of year when trained by Jedd O’Keeffe but the betting suggested that he would need his first run since September and first for Kevin Coleman when lining up in a 5f handicap at Navan last month and so it proved, with the 25-1 chance weakening into 13th place. Aside from this run, his handicap record in July/August on officially good or faster going stands at 1151515020 (4-10) for a profit of £60.50 to a £1 level stake at SP and it’s worth taking the chance that he’ll bounce back to form, especially now back up in trip to 6f.

6.55 Carlisle – AYR POET (0.5pt ew – 10/1 bet365)
Megan Davies has yet to ride a winner after three tries on the Flat and one in a bumper, but I still want to take a chance on the inexperienced amateur in this 1m1f contest. Her mount, AYR POET, has struggled to last trips of 1m3f-1m5f in three of his last four starts and has become well handicapped as a result. Jim Goldie’s veteran can usually be relied upon to run his race at this time of year, landing seven of his 19 starts in August/September. Six of those wins came in Class 6 company (tonight’s race is a Class 5) but there’s compensation in the price and we’ve had a few shocks in this race in recent years (including 33-1, 18-1 and 16-1).
