4.02 Brighton – DARVEL (1pt win – 15/2 bet365)
DARVEL won well backed at Bath on his reappearance in April and had excuses when only ninth to MARSH BENHAM (re-opposes today) at Newbury last time. They went hard up front in that 1m apprentice handicap on the straight course and the faster ground was on the far side of centre, giving low-drawn hold-up horses a big advantage. The winner came from stall 1 (“slowly into stride, in rear”) whereas Darvel was described as “in touch with leaders on near side group” from stall 10. Newfangled, best of the prominent racers in third, franked that form with a win and second place in his next two starts, while the prominent racers in sixth/seventh improved their RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) by 10lb and 7lb next time. Patrick Chamings’s veteran is a dual courser winner, will appreciate the return to this left-handed mile (his last four wins have come over this trip here and at Bath) and Hollie Doyle takes the ride.
6.20 Pontefract – EDUCATOR (1pt win – 6/4 bet365)
EDUCATOR returned from a wind operation to record a 28-1 victory on Lingfield’s Polytrack in late April and Henrietta Knight’s six-year-old followed up when 9-1 for a 1m3.5f handicap at Windsor last month, clocking an impressive speed figure in the process. The son of Deep Impact was the only one of the first five home to make ground from the rear and went straight into my track as one to be interested in next time. The ground will be slower this time around but he’s still worth a bet to complete his hat-trick.

It must have been heartbreaking for Dan Skelton to try all season to land his first trainers championship only for Mullins to win easily despite not seemingly bothered until the…
