3.45 Ascot – THE WIZARD OF EYE (1pt win – 11/1 generally)
THE WIZARD OF EYE wasn’t best drawn when arriving late to land the 7f Victoria Cup here on his debut for Charlie Fellowes last month and it’s interesting to see connections opt for this 6f Group 1 contest rather than stay in handicap company over 7f or 1m. He never reached his full potential when with Stan Moore, often leaving himself vulnerable to closers after racing prominently, and a strongly-run 6f could be right up his street. I’ve saved on WASHINGTON HEIGHTS who did really well to finish a half-length fourth to Mill Stream at York where he was badly drawn.
4.00 Newmarket – ABATE (1pt ew – 10/1 bet365)
ABATE has won eight of his 24 starts in June/July for a profit of £11.72 to a £1 level stake at SP. His three runs at Newmarket in the high summer period produced two wins (12-1 and 3-1) and a three-quarters of a length second (4-1) and he looks the pace angle towards the near side.
5.05 Ascot – TORIVEGA (1pt ew – 50/1 Coral, Ladbrokes, 33/1 bet365)
All the pace in the Wokingham Stakes seems to be from the low draws, so it’s possible that TORIVEGA will struggle to get involved from stall 20 but I still want a small interest at a huge price. The four-year-old ran a belter to finish a 25-1 third of 17 at the Curragh last time, doing best of the closers in third when the 100-1 winner and 11-1 runner-up raced one-two throughout. The patiently-ridden fourth, Tango Flare, won at Fairyhouse next time and the seventh, Coeur d’Or, who also came from off the pace, ran a blinder at Royal Ascot earlier this week on his next start, running sixth of 29 in the Royal Hunt Cup. Danyville, who finished 14th and never got out of midfield that day, chased home Tango Flare at Fairyhouse and three other hold-up horses took each other on in another Fairyhouse contest next time, finishing second, third and fourth.
