3.05 Ascot – GOING THE DISTANCE (1pt ew – 15/2 William Hill)
Ralph Beckett does well in handicaps with his three-year-old runners who were having their second start after a gelding operation, scoring with 23 of the 101 qualifiers for a profit of £65.86 to a £1 level stake at SP. GOING THE DISTANCE is also a good statistical fit for this race – he is drawn high, he won last time out and he’s likely to be ridden patiently. The son of Lope De Vega took his record since his racecourse debut to 111 (3-3) when scoring comfortable at Kempton last time on his first start since being gelded and, while both of his turf wins came on good to soft or faster going, he’s bred to improve for today’s quicker surface.
4.25 Ascot – CAIUS CHORISTER (1pt ew – 12/1 generally)
CAIUS CHORISTER was very unlucky when we bet her in the Ebor last year, meeting trouble at a crucial stage before keeping on into a three-length 22-1 sixth of 22. She’s improved since that run and earned a career-best RPR (Racing Post Rating) when second by a head to Coltrane over 2m here on her reappearance. She matched that figure when going down by a head to Sweet William on soft ground in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown next time and today’s quicker ground will suit.
5.40 Ascot – KING’S GAMBIT (2pt win – 5/2 bet365, 9/4 William Hill)
The Charlton yard has a fine record in the London Gold Cup Handicap at Newbury, often landing it with a subsequent Group winner. Time Test took that 1m2f contest in 2015 off a mark of 93 before four victories in Group 2/3 company (he’s now a successful sire), while Headman landed two Group races subsequently and achieved an official rating of 115. Most famously, Al Kazeem won it off a mark of 95 and went on to land eight Group races, including four Group 1s. It’s possible that this year’s winner KING’ GAMBIT could be in the same league – the son of Saxon Warrior bolted up by four lengths, the race is working out well and William Buick, on board for the first time at Newbury, retains the ride.
