3.45 Ascot – BREEGE (1pt ew – 12/1 William Hill)
This race looks ripe for an upset, as two five-year-olds – Laurel and Rogue Millenium – head the market but four-year-olds have taken 14 of the last 15 renewals. Step forward BREEGE, who got back to winning ways in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom last time. There were some hard-luck stories in behind The John & Sean Quinn-trained filly that day but she’s very consistent and her three runs at Ascot have produced three placed efforts including a 33-1 second of 29 in last season’s Sandringham Stakes over the straight mile. The first-time cheekpieces could eke out some improvement and the fast ground won’t be an issue.
4.25 Ascot- ALFLAILA (1pt win – 12/1 bet365, 10/1 Ladbrokes)
With market leaders Auguste Rodin and Inspiral both prone to running the occasional stinker I’m going to take a chance on the reappearing ALFLAILA to cause an upset in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. The Owen Burrows-trained five-year-old could never strike a blow when a three-length fifth to Auguste Rodin in the Irish Champion Stakes when we last saw him, but the Leopardstown track was strongly favouring early pace and it was a good effort in the circumstances. His seasonal debut record reads 111 (3-3) and Jim Crowley cause a minor upset in these colours last year, steering 10-1 shot Mostahdaf to victory.
5.05 Ascot – DAYSOFOURLIVES (1pt ew – 22/1 Ladbrokes, 20/1 bet365)
The Marco Botti-trained DAYSOFOURLIVES has only once finished outside of the first four in his nine-race career and has form figures, aside from seasonal debuts, of 311312 (3-6). He has a win and a second place (last time out) to his name from two runs at 1m2f but today’s strongly-run 1m on a straight course will suit better and he was only beaten by a nose and a head when a best-of-the-stands’ side 18-1 third of 17 under these conditions at Newmarket on his reappearance in April when the tailwind made life very difficult for his patient tactics. He has his quirks – he’s worn headgear in all nine starts – but was a winner in first-time cheekpieces on his third career outing and the switch to first-time cheekpieces could bring about some improvement.
5.40 Ascot – AURORA DAWN (1pt ew – 16/1 bet365, 14/1 generally)
AURORA DAWN looked unlucky when sixth to Royal Hunt Cup hope Wild Tiger in a hot 7f handicap at Goodwood last time and is worth an each-way dabble in the Kensington Palace Stakes, now run over the straight mile after the first three runnings took place on the round course. Ed Walker’s four-year-old was repeatedly denied a clear passage at Goodwood and will appreciate the return to a straight track. Her record on straight courses reads 311 (2-3), improving to 11 (2-2) on turf with the wins by a combined margin of more than six lengths. Both victories came over 7f but she stays this far and the likely strong gallop will suit.
