Andrew Mount has picked out five best bets to compliment an extremely busy Saturday of top class racing across a number of tracks.
Posted: 2.10pm, Friday, October 10th
2.05 York – ERZINDJAN (1pt win – 100/30 Betfred, 3/1 generally)
EZRINDJAN rewarded each-way support when we backed him each-way for the Cambridgeshire last time but that 28-1 fourth was hard to take as he ‘won’ the race on his side of the track by almost five lengths. Terry Kent’s veteran has only been raised 1lb for that effort and has run today’s course and distance well in his two other starts for his current yard, most notable when a best-of-the-closers 80-1 fourth of 18 in the John Smith’s Cup. This £25k to the winner handicap represents a drop in class and he’s worth a bet despite his patient style making him reliant on a decent gallop and luck in running.
2.45 Chepstow – NEON MOON (1pt each-way – 8/1 generally)ampton – FIRST GREYED (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
NEON MOON best efforts have come in the March to October period and his full record outside of the winter months stands at 171163P113144 (6-13) for a profit of £34.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (he’s 1-17 outside of this period with the sole success in mid-February). When rested for more than six weeks his March-October record becomes 111314 (4-6) including reappearance wins in the each of the past two seasons. David Pipe’s nine-year-old is 2lb lower than when successful in this race last year and can get the better of main danger DESTROYTHEEVIDENCE, a likely improver on the back of a wind operation.
3.00 Newmarket – SABA DESERT (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 generally)
SABA DESERT overcame greenness to land odds of 4-7 at Sandown on his debut and took a big step forward when landing the Group 2 Superlative Stakes from Aidan O’Brien’s Italy. The Dubawi colt was sent off at just 6-1 for the Group 1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh next time but trailed home last of six after hanging badly to his right. Today’s faster ground will suit and the general 25-1 looks an over-reaction, especially now that the cheekpieces go on. Since 2016, Charlie Appleby is 29 from 93 when using this headgear on a turf runners for a profit of £43.28 to a £1 level stake at SP.
3.15 York – BINHAREER (1pt e/w – 6/1 generally) & UNCLE DON (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)
Nine of the past ten winners of the 6f Coral Sprint Trophy were drawn in stall 8 or lower and seven of the past ten prepped at Ayr in the Gold or Silver Cups. The William Haggas-trained BINHAREER (stall 6 of 22) won over 7f at two but has improved since gelded/dropped to 6f this year, recording form figures over this trip of 1236 (1-4). The sixth place was arguably his best effort, as it came behind Candy in the Ayr Silver Cup from a less-than-deal draw. That race is working out well, with the third and eighth winning since, while the runner-up, fourth and ninth all placed at the next time of asking.
The low-drawn angle might not be as important this year if the Going Stick is to be believed (it suggests that the best ground is down the middle of track and that the stands’ side is quicker than the far side) and I also want to side with UNCLE DON (stall 16) who was unlucky in running when fourth at Haydock last time.
