1.20 Dundalk – THE HIGHWAY RAT (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
THE HIGHWAY RAT ran a cracking race to finish a one-length third to Keke in the Rockingham Handicap at the Curragh last time, especially as he missed a beat at the start. Andrew Oliver’s veteran won well at Navan on his penultimate start but has a superior strike-rate on the all-weather, landing five of his 11 starts (all here at Dundalk). He bolted up in this race four years ago and this will be his first all-weather handicap start since that effort. This race is packed full of early pace, and it should be set up nicely for him.
2.50 Newmarket – AKKADIAN THUNDER (1pt e/w -13/2 William Hill, four places)
AKKADIAN THUNDER has a solid record over a straight 7f on turf, recording form figures of 128312 (2-6), with the sole unplaced effort an eyecatching eighth of 18 on unsuitably soft ground at Ascot where he was repeatedly denied a clear passage. He clocked a fast time when runner-up to Never So Brave in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, albeit from a favourable high draw, and this track is likely to prove ideal. William Buick is a positive jockey booking and the race should be run to suit.
3.10 York – HAVE SECRET (1pt e/w – 25/1 Ladbrokes, Coral, BetVictor) & SOLDIER’S EMPIRE (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 generally)
After glancing at the pace map for the John Smith’s Cup the obvious angle is to back THUNDER RUN, who looks like he could be in receipt of an easy lead. However, he’s stuck out wide in stall 17 and his chance is covered in offers of around 5-1. There are a couple of outsiders who appeal more, namely HAVE SECRET and SOLDIER’S EMPIRE, who are well berthed in stalls 5 and 4 respectively. HAVE SECRET beat only one home at Epsom time but that was on Oaks Day when those ridden patiently could never get involved and it’s safe to draw a line through that effort. Richard Fahey’s five-year-old fared best of the closers when second at Ripon on his penultimate start and was a close-up third to Thunder Run over today’s course and distance at the Dante meeting when not best drawn. He sat in second place in the early stages that day and I’m hoping/expecting that he reverts to more prominent tactics on a track where he invariably runs well.
SOLDIER’S EMPIRE is far more speculative selection, but he wasn’t entirely disgraced when mid-division at 100-1 in the Royal Hunt Cup on his return from three months off. Marco Botti’s four-year-old was a 1m2f winner in Bahrain earlier this year and will appreciate the step back up in trip and the turning track.
3.45 York – TABLETALK (1pt win – 3/1 Paddy Power, 5/2 bet365)
TABLETALK tends to hang to his left and has never won right-handed (0-3). When racing the other way round his record reads 10122 (2-5), with the ‘duck egg’ a 100-1 tenth of 16 in City Of Troy’s Derby. He has El Cordobes back in third place when runner-up to Eydon on his latest left-handed outing and he won the Melrose Handicap over course and distance at last season’s Ebor Meeting on his only previous trip to York.
7.20 Salisbury – SOUL DANCE (1pt win – 11/8 generally)
The first-time cheekpieces are a negative for the Gosden-trained QUEEN OF THIEVES and the bet in this fillies’ handicap has to be SOUL DANCE. Andrew Balding’s three-year-old has improved sine handicapping, landing a fillies-only contest by five lengths at Nottingham before finding Enrolled three-quarters of a length too good over 1m here when taking on the boys.
