2.40 Sandown – DAWN CHARGER (1pt ew – 12/1 generally)
DAWN CHARGER trailed home last of 14 in a 6f Listed contest at Chantilly earlier this month, but Karl Burke’s filly has always seemed happiest in small fields, recording form figures in single-digit line-ups of 211212 (3-6), with all the defeats by one length or less. The cut back to a stiff 5f won’t inconvenience and she’ll appreciate the rain that’s forecast to fall this morning.
3.35 York – WE NEVER STOP (0.5pt win – 33/1 bet365)
The strong bias to low draws at York’s earlier meetings this season looked to have swung the other way yesterday, favouring high draws. Having studied this 19-runner 6f handicap on Thursday, I was expecting to back one or two runners drawn very low but I’m switching to Kevin Ryan’s WE NEVER STOP, drawn top-of-the-shop in stall 19. He looks set to improve for his comeback fifth to James’s Delight at Newmarket and has run some good races over course and distance, albeit on quicker ground. There’s not a huge about of pace on offer here, despite the big field, and he’ll give us a run for our money against the fence at a huge price, though I want to be on win only as he’s a ‘win or bust’ type of speculative bet.
4.25 Sandown – ROYAL VELVET (1.5pt win – 13/2 William Hill)
The William Knight-trained ROYAL VELVET, twice a winner on the all-weather, was only seventh of 13 at Newmarket on last month’s turf debut but her patient style made life tough in a race in which it paid to be on the front end (the first three were described by the Racing Post as ‘led group’, ‘in touch with leaders’ and ‘prominent’), and she actually did third best of those to come from off the pace, going down by just over three lengths. The patiently-ridden fourth and eighth have both won since and Royal Velvet herself can be forgiven her subsequent Goodwood fifth as the steadily-run 7f didn’t bring her stamina into play and she was still two lengths down at the line.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – The Lower the Class of Race, the Less Predictable the Result
After tackling Epsom’s unique course with his Myth Busters column last week, Andrew Mount returns this week in a more general setting, asking whether the quality of race affects the predictability of the result. I’ve listened to plenty of punters and pundits discuss their favourite races to bet in and the most common answer that…
