2.40 Newmarket – CARRYTHEONE (1pt ew – 33/1 bet365, Betfair, Paddy Power, Coral)
CARRYTHEONE caught the eye when a 25-1 six-length ninth of 15 at Newmarket’s Craven meeting last month, doing well to finish so close under a patient ride when it paid to race up with the pace. His low draw did for him in the Victoria Cup at Ascot last week where his eight-length defeat was worthy of an upgrade, and he looks over-priced at 25-1 or bigger today. I’ve saved on FINAL WATCH.
3.00 Newbury – KING’S GAMBIT (2pt win – 9/2 generally)
This 1m2f handicap has a history of producing future Group winners and KING’S GAMBIT could certainly fall into that category. The Charlton yard has won this on three occasions recently, including with the 93-rated Time Test who went on to achieve a rating of 121 before a successful career at stud, and King’s Gambit runs off the same mark, which could be similarly lenient. The son of Saxon Warrior was a 33-1 winner here on his second career start and improved his RPR (Racing Post rating) by 11lb (to 98) when going down by a head to Bracken’s Laugh (now rated 108) over the same course and distance next time. The step up to 1m2f should suit.
3.35 Newbury – WITCH HUNTER (0.5pt ew – 66/1 Ladbrokes, 50/1 generally)
WITCH HUNTER caught the eye over 7f at Haydock last week, doing best of the closers in third place. Richard Hannon’s gelding has won at 12-1 and 50-1 on his last two starts on straight turf tracks (both at 7f) and, at a huge price, it’s worth taking a chance on his stamina in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.
5.40 Bangor – SOMESPRING SPECIAL (3pt win – 7/2 bet365)
I’m very surprised to see the Racing Post put in SOMESPRING SPECIAL as the 7-2 second favourite for this 2m1.5f handicap chase and Anthony Honeyball’s progressive six-year-old is going to be difficult to beat. She certainly lives up to her name, recording form figures in the spring (March to May) of 31111 (4-5), with the defwat by four lengths when 33-1 for a novices’ hurdle at Wincanton. The winner of that race is now rated 144 over fences and Somespring Special’s current mark of 119 still looks lenient.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Is Being Gelded a Negative Where Flat Horses are Concerned?
The low draw dilemma proved as prevalent a discussion point as ever during the Chester May meeting last week. Andrew Mount discussed that in last week‘s column, but turns his attentions to a broader question for this week: should being gelded be regarded as a negative for flat horses? The Nigel Tinkler-trained Duran trailed home…
