2.00 Curragh – CANON’S HOUSE (1pt win – 7/1 Paddy Power)

Regular readers know that I love siding with British-trained runners in Irish sprints and I can’t resist an each-way interest on CANON’S HOUSE for the Michael and David Easterby yard. The four-year-old, who looks the likeliest front-runner, is three from three this season, scoring by a combined margin of 11 lengths. The form of his latest Hamilton win has been franked by the runner-up and fifth and this is his yard’s first runner in Ireland since that won this with 16-1 shot Perfect Pasture back in 2016.

2.40 Market Rasen – CAVERN CLUB (1pt e/w – 8/1 William Hill)

Horses who prepped in a non-hurdle race have a good recent record in the Summer Handicap Hurdle and I like the claims of James Owen’s CAVERN CLUB, successful on the Flat at Chester last time. The five-year-old arrived late that day and such tactics are likely to prove ideal here given the forecast strong gallop. He’s only 6b higher than when scoring at Doncaster on his most recent jumps outing

2.57 Newbury – FERROUS (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally – bet365 and Sky Bet both paying four places)

It’s easy to dismiss the claims of FERROUS in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes, as Jack Channon’s five-year-old looks like an all-weather expert, having recorded form figures on synthetic surfaces of 21151113 (5-8). We punted him each-way (9-4f from 7-1) when third in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle last time on his Group-race debut and I want to go in again at a much bigger price, even though he returns to turf this afternoon. He’s won two of his 11 starts on grass and the poor runs – a sixth of 14, ninth of 16, 21st of 25 and tenth of 14, have all come in big fields which don’t suit as he often meets trouble in running. His turf runs in fields of 12 or fewer runners have produced form figures of 3131533 (2-7), with the fifth place excusable as he missed the break. His only previous course and distance run saw him finish third in a hot Class 2 handicap last May and the pair that beat him – Lethal Levi and Rumstar – have both proven themselves in Group company subsequently and are now rated 18lb and 11lb higher respectively.

4.55 Newmarket – SPIRITED STYLE (2pt win – 11/4 bet365, 5/2 William Hill)

In the past ten years (nine renewals) horses who prepped at Ascot are 0-15 in the Listed Aphrodite Stakes and I want to field against 40-1 Ribblesdale runner-up as she looked flattered by coming from off the pace. I’d rather side with Charlie Appleby’s SPIRITED STYLE who improved significantly on her Ascot debut second when bolting up in a fast time in a Haydock maiden. Stablemate Silent Love, five lengths back in third, gave the form a minor boost when winning next time and runner stepping up from maiden/novice company are three from eight in the past ten years for a profit of £8.75 to a £1 level stake at SP.

16:55 Ric And Mary Hambro Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) (GBBPlus Race)

6.55 Haydock – SEVENTY (1pt win – 11/2 Sky Bet)

SEVENTY ran respectably over 1m in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket on his debut back in April, keeping on into ninth of 15 behind High Stock (now rated 107). Six of the other eight horses to beat him who have run three of more times (i.e. enough to get a handicap mark) have been given ratings between 76 and 84 and Richard Hannon’s three-year-old could be well-in off 65 after two subsequent defeats over 7f. The step up to 1m2f will suit the son of Ghaiyyath on his handicap debut and backing the sire’s progeny over 1m2f or further is a profitable exercise.
