1.25 Epsom – COMMANDER CROUCH (0.5pt ew – 33/1 generally)
COMMANDER CROUCH ran with credit over the extended mile here in April, finishing a 33-1 sixth of 11 behind Portsmouth (re-opposes today) in a race that worked out well. He was outpaced before staying on to finish eight lengths behind the winner, suggesting that a step up in trip were needed. Jim Boyle’s three-year-old ran a similar race at Sandown (1m, soft) next time when just over six lengths behind Blake in a 22-1 seventh and looks worth a speculative punt now upped to 1m2f for the first time in his career.
3.10 Epsom – CURIOUS ROVER (0.5pt ew – 40/1 William Hill, 33/1 generally)
CURIOUS ROVER recorded form figures of 3212122 (2-7) as a juvenile and while he’s finished well beaten in both starts this term he’s had excuses. He would have needed his comeback effort at Thirsk in April – also his first run since a gelding operation – and was then drawn out of it when a 40-1 14th of 17 at York. Epsom’s fast/downhill 5f could suit in-form Katie Scott’s pacesetter and his draw near the stands’ side rail could prove useful.
3.45 Epsom – NIGHT ON EARTH (1pt ew – 14/1 William Hill, Betfair)
NIGHT ON EARTH impressed me with the manner of his course and distance victory in April, breaking smartly from his low draw and getting across to lead on the near side rail to score by just over one length from Looking For Lynda (re-opposes today). His subsequent close-up Chester fifth from stall 11 of 11 (non-runner adjusted was another fine effort) and though only fourth at Goodwood last time I suspect the return to Epsom could be the key. Trainer Ian Williams has a fantastic recent record in sprint handicaps at this venue (six of his last 12 runners have run) and he looks worth an each-way bet.
