One of the flagship chases of the early jumps season takes place at Wetherby in the Charlie Hall on Saturday. Andrew Mount has a selection in that race among five in all for his daily best bets to kick off the weekend.

2.22 Wetherby – STRONG LEADER (1pt win – 15/8 BetVictor, 7/4 generally) & 1pt win DODDIETEHGREAT (10/1 bet365, 9/1 generally)
STRONG LEADER struggled on stiff/undulating tracks and has draw a blank from seven runs at Ascot (0-2) and Cheltenham (0-5). In-form Olly Murphy’s eight-year-old has form figures on flat courses of 111120112 (6-9) for a profit of £11.52 to a £1 level stake at SP, including five from six below Grade 1 level.
Best fresh DODDIETHEGREAT bombed out on his reappearance/chase debut last season but his other runs when rested for at least 90 days (or his racecourse debut) have returned form figures of 1111 (4-4). He doesn’t deserve to be the complete outsider of the field. I’ll also be playing the pair in a reversed forecast.
2.57 Wetherby – DJELO (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
Those aged ten and older have a poor recent record in the Charlie Hall Chase and I’m happy to oppose PROTEKTORAT, HEWICK and PIC D’ORHY. Preference is for the Venetia Williams-trained DJELO, a seven-year-old who runs especially well when fresh. He went off the boil last spring but that’s typical of him – He has form figures in March/April of 83876 (0-5) – and he’s best judged on his November to February record of 1230111F22121 (6-13), improving to 1211121 (5-7) in November/December only.
3.10 Ascot – TORRENT (1pt e/w – 20/1 BetVictor, Boylesports, 18/1 bet365, all paying four places)
I’m a big fan of the consistent TORRENT, who took his hurdles record over trips of about two miles to 1212333332 (2-10) when a 22-1 second to Gibbs Island at Chepstow last time. I was desperate for Nigel Hawke’s four-year-old to get into the Fred Winter last season, as I felt the big field/strong pace would play to his strengths and he was twice placed behind East India Dock in Graded company. I’ve saved on OOH BETTY.
3.45 Ascot – NEON MOON (1pt e/w – 7/1 bet365, Coral, Ladbrokes – all paying four places)
NEON MOON, a non-runner on account of the very fast ground when I put him up as a bet at Chepstow last month, is taken to improve on last month’s third in the Sodexo Live! Handicap Chase which came off a 6lb higher mark (he also lost a shoe). David Pipe’s nine-year-old has a good record when fresh, bolting up by 12 lengths when a 12-1 shot at Ludlow on his reappearance in the 2023/24 campaign and, last season, landing the same Chepstow race from which he was pulled out last month. Today’s race is very competitive, but I want to oppose 7-2 favourite THE CHANGING MAN who has won just once from his last 17 starts and that was a four-runner contest in which the odds-on favourite Jango Baie unseated his rider.
