3.35 Newbury – IT AIN’T TWO (1.5pt win – 3/1 bet365, William Hill)
3.35 Newbury – AL HUSSAR (0.5pt ew – 50/1 bet365, William Hill)
Fillies have a poor record in the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown and IT AIN’T TWO‘s runner-up effort in that 5f contest on July 5th took the score to just one from 36 since 2007. Hugo Palmer’s 5-2 second favourite pulled four and a half lengths clear of the third and looks the obvious one in the Super Sprint today. Fillies who started in the first two in the betting for the Dragon Stakes are three from seven at the next time of asking (+£4.44 to a £1 level stake at SP) and she looks well drawn in stall 15 of 19.
AL HUSSAR had the worst of the draw when eighth of nine at Redcar last time and that race is working out well. Surprise winner Mr Lightside (18-1) didn’t have the best of draws in stall 6 and he comfortably defied a penalty when 8-1 at Nottingham next time, fourth-placed Airspeed (stall 5) landed the odds at Hamilton when we next saw him, fifth home Go On Rosie (stall 8) ran a blinder from a poor draw when a 33-1 sixth of 13 at York and on Thursday of this week the runner-up (Lady Luzon) and sixth (Sttion X) ran one-two at Hamilton. Grant Tuer’s colt made all at Doncaster on his penultimate start and could surprise, especially if the ground continues to dry out.
3.50 Market Rasen – NOBLE ANTHEM (1.5pt win – 12/1 with bet365)
NOBLE ANTHEM was not helped by challenging towards the inside when a half-length runner-up in a handicap hurdle here last Saturday and left the impression that he would have won granted a wide trip. Adrian Keatley’s five-year-old was also the only one of the first five home to race anywhere near the early pace and he looks worth a punt now that his attention is switched to fences. He’s yet to race over the larger obstacles but his yard’s chasers are profitable to back blind (seven winners from 51 runners, +£9.17 to a £1 level stake at SP), with the handicappers weighting in with five wins from 34 (+£14.50). Only four of those handicap chasers were making their debut over fences and they included an 11-1 winner and a 25-1 second.
6.25 Haydock – BEAMING LIGHT (1pt win – 20/1 with Paddy Power/Betfair)
I took a chance and backed BEAMING LIGHT each-way for a 1m novice contest at Thirsk last time, despite the suspicion that we wouldn’t see the best of him until handicapping, and Laura Horsfall’s four-year-old had to settle for a modest 33-1 fourth of eight after racing up with the pace. That was no disgrace and there are definitely races to be won with him judged on his four-length 400-1 fifth of ten at Nottingham last month where he finished best of the hold-up horses. The step back up to 1m2f is unlikely to be an issue and an opening mark of 70 is fair enough.
