Safer Gambling Week 2025
This year Safer Gambling Week runs from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd November, with the intention to educate bettors around the importance of responsible gambling. Here at GG we fully support the initiative and have pulled some information together about how people can evaluate whether they are betting safely and the tools offered by bookmakers…
Wed 12 Nov 202512.40 Haydock – GENTLEMAN BILL (1pt win – 7/2 bet365, 100/30 William Hill and Betfred)
GENTLEMAN BILL was an eyecatcher in a novice hurdle at Catterick last January when taking the ‘swamp’ route up the inside rail, doing well to finish second to the Willie Mullins-trained Jarrive De Mee. Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero’s seven-year-old struggled in Class 2 handicap hurdles the next twice but this point winner shoed much more on his reappearance/Rules chase debut last month, finishing less than four lengths behind Jordans Cross in a Class 3 novices’ handicap at Aintree. The time was fast, the winner looked set to follow up at Cheltenham before falling at the last fence and is value to beat unbeaten chaser DAVID’S WELL, the obvious one for the forecast.
12.55 Ascot – GOOD LOOK CHARM (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power, both four places)
Anthony Honeyball’s break-returners have a good record at this time of year, and GOOD LOOK CHARM is taken to make a winning reappearance in this mares’ handicap hurdle. The nine-year-old does well against her own sex on right-handed tracks, recording form figures of 711311 (4-6) for a profit of £36.13 to a £1 level stake at SP. This 2m7.5f trip is arguably further than ideal but I still like her chances of being in the first three or four.
2.05 Ascot – CREDO (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
The Badger Beers Handicap Chase at Wincanton on November 8th was the usual front-runners’ benefit, with Anthony Honeyball’s Gustavian making all on his first run back after a wind operation. Since 2015 (11 renewals), pacesetters are four from 11 (+£36.50 to a £1 level stake at SP), prominent racers are seven from 44 (+£46.25) while hold-up horses have failed to register a win from 74 runners. Third-placed CREDO, a stablemate of the winner, was left with plenty to on her reappearance that day and can have her effort upgraded. She scored twice last season on stiff tracks when the pace horses came back to the field and that’s a distinct possibility in the 3m5f Berkshire National at Ascot this afternoon.
2.25 Haydock – ELECTRIC MASON (1pt e/w – 12/1 William Hill, four places, 11-1 bet365, five places) & MA SHANTOU (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill, 9/2 general)
The well backed MA SHANTOU impressed on his handicap hurdle debut at Cheltenham last month, landing a Pertemps Qualifier by almost three lengths from ELECTRIC MASON. The six-year-old had finished a 25-1 seventh of 20 in the Albert Bartlett on his latest outing and the yard’s last handicap hurdle debutant to prep in a Grade 1 contest was Paisley Park back in 2018. He’s gone up 9lb for that victory but could still be generously handicapped.
ELECTRIC MASON was the only one of the first four home to race up with the pace in Ma Shantou’s Cheltenham race and his running style will be better suited to Haydock. He again looks the chief threat.
