2.20 Cheltenham – HYLAND (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, William Hill)

HYLAND has yet to win in the depths of winter, recording form figures from December to February of 44333622 (0-8) but it’s a very different story in the warmer months, with form figures between March and November of 13212711021411P (7-15) for a profit of £17.88 to a £1 level stake at SP. He won at this meeting last season, slamming Transmission by 15 lengths in the 3m Class 2 novices’ chase and he also did so in 2023 when landing the Pertemps Qualifier. His prominent style will be an asset.

2.55 Cheltenham – LONG DRAW (1pt e/w – 13/2 generally, Coral and BetVictor paying five places)

Olly Murphy only had two handicap runners at last season’s Cheltenham festival, placing at 28-1 and 10-1. I needed LONG DRAW for an each-way treble in the Pertemps Final, but he was first reserve and didn’t get a run. The six-year-old landed a punt when advised in this column at Cheltenham’s April meeting and signed off with a close-up third of 13 at Haydock in May. That run took his record in handicap hurdle company to 4122221413 (3-10) and he can maintain that in-the-frame sequence when he lines up in this Pertemps Qualifier.

3.45 Newbury – MISS WONG (0.5pt e/w – 22/1 William Hill, one-quarter first three, 22/1 bet365, one fifth first three, 20/1 Ladbrokes, Betfred)

MISS WONG clocked an extremely fast time for a Class 4 race when bolting up in the mud at Yarmouth last month and built on that with a neck second in a Class 2 fillies’ handicap at Newmarket where her patient running style was a big negative. That was a fine effort in the circumstances and she’s worth chancing at a big price despite stepping up to Group 3 level.

15:45 BetVictor St Simon Stakes (Group 3)

3.55 Kelso – ELVIS MAIL (1pt win – 6/1 bet365)

Veteran ELVIS MAIL won the Edinburgh Gin Chase 12 months ago when advised in this column and I want to back him again despite the 315-day absence. Nick Alexander’s grey has form figures at this venue of 41311222431131 (6-14) for a profit of £16.68 to a £1 level stake at SP, including three wins from three starts at today’s 3m2f trip. He also won this race on his reappearance in the 2023/24 season and won at the first time of asking in 2020/21 and in 2022/23.

4.25 Doncaster – GREY CUBAN (1pt win – 5/1 generally)

I was initially tempted to side with mud-lover ALPHA CRUCIS in this 1m2f handicap, but he’s been struggling to get his head in front of late, is 2lb higher than when fourth in this race last year and seems happier on sharper tracks, especially Goodwood and Epsom. Of greater interest is Huge Palmer’s GREY CUBAN, who has a fantastic record on flat tracks over a trip of about 1m2f, recording form figures under such conditions of 1119211 (5-7), with the ninth place excusable as he was drawn widest of all at Chester. Friday’s headwind is forecast to die down by post time, so his prominent running style is unlikely to be an issue, and he won on his latest course visit.

4.50 Newbury – MUSTAZEED (1pt win – 11/1 bet365)

Newbury is not a venue that is usually associated with course experts though the Harry Eustace-trained MUSTAZEED clearly fits into that category thanks to form figures here of 01148211 (4-8), with the ‘duck egg’ coming for previous handler Chris Wall. The big field will hopefully lead to a decent gallop for this hold-up performer, and the soft ground will suit.

16:50 Tony Penny 50th Birthday Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

5.30 Doncaster – ONEMORENOMORE (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)

ONEMORENOMORE took his record away from Doncaster to 0-23 when third of seven at Chelmsford last time and will be happier now returned to his favourite venue. Charlie MacBride’s five-year-old has form figures on Town Moor of 11643186 (3-8) and is 3lb lower than when taking a division of this 7f handicap on soft ground last year. His only previous course outing this season – a sixth of 15 at the Lincoln meeting – was a solid effort as he fared best of those to race up with the pace in a 7f handicap set up for the closers. Of the remainder, WOBWOBWOB has possibilities though the Keatley yard is quiet and the chief threat could come from SUPREME KING, fourth in a fast time when favourite for Thurso’s race at Wolverhampton last time, a contest that is working out well.
