2.00 York – JUBILEE WALK (1pt each-way – 13/2 generally, bet365 paying six places)
James Ferguson’s JUBILEE WALK (stall 8 of 9) was well supported for a 6f handicap at Chester last time, despite his wide draw, but got no cover and was very keen approaching the first bend. Ray Dawson soon got him settled in sixth place, but he was several lengths behind the front-runners and couldn’t strike a meaningful blow, keeping on, to finish three and a half lengths back in third behind Alzahir, a winner again since. The time was quick and that run – his first since wind surgery and first since a gelding operation – came on the back of a 149-day break and there should be improvement to come. The four-year-old is 1-1 at York and looks well drawn in stall 5.
2.20 Ascot – CHESHIRE DANCER (0.5pt e/w – 28-1 bet365, 25-1 Sky Bet, both four places. Bigger elsewhere but only three places)
CHESHIRE DANCER chased home ROYAL DRESS when 10-1 for a Listed race at Pontefract 18 days ago and though beaten by more than three lengths doesn’t deserve to be 25-1+ to reverse the form today. Royal Dress is 0-10 when returned to the track between one and 30 days since her last run, while Cheshire Dancer’s full record on tracks with an uphill finish like Ascot reads 12142132 (3-8).
3.35 Ascot – MYTHICAL GUEST (1pt e/w – 22/1 generally with the firms paying five places, including bet365 and Ladbrokes)
BULLET POINT, best of the far side bunch when runner-up to My Cloud over this course and distance in the Royal Hunt Cup last month, looks solid at the head of the betting but he could get taken on for the lead by SISYPHEAN, who also ran well in the same race at Royal Ascot. Take the pair on with hold-up performer MYTHICAL GUEST, whose record in 1m handicaps on straight courses reads 232283 (0-6), including a second to My Cloud and a third place from two runs at Ascot. He should be staying on to good effect down the nearside and the place part of the bet is especially attractive.
3.40 Newcastle – WISH THIS (1pt win – 20/1 bet365)
WISH THIS wouldn’t be an obvious selection for this 1m handicap after his 12-1 eighth of 11 finish at Ayr on July 7th – his first run for Alan Brown after leaving Jennifer Lynch’s yard in Ireland – but that run was better than it looked. The three-year-old raced prominently in that 7f Ayr contest in a race set up for the closers and the two other prominent racers who beat him – 11-1 third Loving Apprentice and 4-1 sixth Red Mirage – both won at the next time of asking (at odds of 9-4 and 14-1 respectively). His new yard does well in all-weather handicaps, especially on Tapeta, and the switch to synthetics for the first time is unlikely to be an issue on breeding.
4.15 Newcastle – BETTER (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
I wrote the following in Racing & Football Outlook about the Paul Midgley-trained BETTER after his fourth place to Miss Rainbow in first-time cheekpieces at Thirsk last month…
“Only MISS RAINBOW (stall 10 of 10) committed to the stands’ side rail in the 5f Hambelton Room Delicious Dining “A La Carte” Handicap and Tracy Waggott’s four-year-old (“Prominent, ridden to lead against near rail over of out”) scored comfortably from front-runner DANDY FITZ (stall 4). Two of the low-drawn hold-up horses caught the eye – fourth-placed BETTER (stall 2) and eighth home FORTUNATE STAR (stall 1). The last-named, sent off as a 9-2 joint-favourite, stumbled on leaving the stalls and raced widest of all. Declan Caroll’s five-year-old could be out at Nottingham on Thursday. The Paul Midgely-trained Better has yet to win on turf and will be of particular interest when returned to a Tapeta surface.”
Fortunate Star didn’t run in that Nottingham race but he won by three lengths at odds of 7-1 at Haydock next time and should have followed up at Doncaster on July 10th where he went down by a nose at 8-1 (he could further frank the form in the 3.20 at York today). BETTER has raced one since, finishing second by a head when 7-1 for a 5f classified contest at Nottingham, and will be happier back on Tapeta today in a race that looks set to favour his patient running style.

Andrew’s Angles – Super Sprint Saturday Under The Microscope
