1.55 Goodwood – SAM HAWKENS (1pt win – 6/1 bet365, 11/2 William Hill, 5/1 generally)
Runners who prepped over 1m4f or shorter are 0-40 in the past ten renewals of the 1m6f Summer Handicap and a prep at Ascot, York or on the all-weather has also been a negative. Those stats rule out plenty of the runners and one who survives the cut is the William Haggas-trained SAM HAWKENS. This progressive four-year-old has improved since a gelding operation and was probably in need of run – despite starting as the 5-2 favourite – when fourth of seven at Ripon on April’s reappearance. He followed that with wins at Newcastle and Hamilton (1m5f, good to soft) and would be favourite in my tissue. The form of his latest success has been franked by the runner-up and he should have more improvement to come.
2.10 Newmarket – AWAAFI (1pt win – 7/2 bet365, Betfred)
AWAAFI, a winner at Hamilton on his debut, caught the eye when second to Rogue Temptation at Haydock last time, doing best of the closers. She was more than five lengths ahead of the next patiently-ridden finisher and looks worth a bet on her handicap debut. Richard Fahey has a fine record with nursery debutants on turf who were having their third career outing, scoring with nine of the 34 qualifiers since 2015 for a profit of £26.18 to a £1 level stake at SP.
RUBY’S ANGEL, just behind AWAAFI at Haydock, looks the likeliest pace angle and could be the one for the forecast.
3.05 Goodwood – HAMMER THE HAMMER (1pt win – 7/1 Ladbrokes, BetVictor) & JORDAN ELECTRICS (1pt e/w – 33/1 bet 365, Paddy Power, both six places, 28/1 generally)
I’ve been going round in circles with this race, especially regarding the draw, but the false rail came down yesterday revealing a fresh strip of ground and the far side certainly looked faster than the middle of the track after Friday’s opener. It could prove advantageous to go across to that rail and HAMMER THE HAMMER (stall 4 of 28) will blaze a trail on that side. Kevin Ryan’s three-year-old found the drop to 5f against him when runner-up in the Palace Of Holyrood House at Royal Ascot last time but his earlier hat-trick included a pair of 6f wins and he’s sure to give it a good go from the front. If the far side is the place to be then Jim Goldie’s JORDAN ELECTRICS (stall 2) is over-priced. It was interesting to see his trainer choose stall 2 when one of the first names out of the hat in the ‘draw for the draw’ and the nine-year-old will improve for last week’s comeback run at York where he was badly drawn behind Elmonjed. Since joining his current yard, he’s two from two on his second run of the season (he’s also two from two at the third time of asking and will be of interesting in the Symphony Group Handicap at York’s Ebor meeting, a race in which he was second last year). Claimer ridden at York last time, Paul Mulrennan is back on board today and his record on the son of Dandy Man reads 11341121112 (7-11) for a profit of £20.83 to a £1 level stake at SP.
4.35 Newmarket – BEYLERBEYI (1.5pt win – 11/2 bet365)
Ian Williams has a fine record in Flat turf handicaps with last time out winners making a quick return to action (eight days or less), scoring with 30 of the 69 qualifiers (43.4%) for a profit of £36.97 to a £1 level stake at SP. BEYLERBEYI signalled that his turn was near when a 16-1 third at York on July 11th and went two laces better at the same venue seven days ago. The step back up to 1m4f clearly helped that day and this race should be run to suit his patient style.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
