2.25 Sandown – BETTY CLOVER (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally with the firms paying four places, including bet365 and Betfred, 40-1 Hills but only three places)
BETTY CLOVER wouldn’t be an obvious play in the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes on the strength of her 14-1 seventh of 14 in the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood but that race was not run to suit her patient stye and she actually fared second best of those to come from off the pace. Eve Johnson Houghton’s three-year-old was only beaten by just under three lengths, which was a solid effort in the circumstances. She has form on soft ground (though was withdrawn on heavy once), the return to 1m will suit and her two wins have both come in big fields like today’s (14 and 15 ran).
3.15 Chester – AL SHABAB STORM (1pt e/w – 11/1 generally, four places)
This 7.5f handicap has been a good race for horses drawn 1-6, for those aged 4-6 and for the top four in the weights. Combining those three angles would have seen us back five of the past ten winners (from 17 bets) for a profit of £28.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. There are two qualifiers – AL SHABAB STORM and Witch Hunter, with preference for the first-named whose record here reads 2112 (2-4), with the first defeat by a neck and the other by one length in a Listed race won by Quinault.
4.50 Lingfield – RISING FORCE (1pt e/w – 2/1 generally)
RISING FORCE prefers a big field/strong pace scenario and is also best off the back of a recent outing (within the past three weeks). His record in handicap company when those conditions coincide read 912591242314 (3-12) for a profit of £42.00 to a £1 level stake at SP and they should go sufficiently fast for him in this 1m amateur riders’ handicap. Last year, the winner, runner-up and fourth came from well off the pace in this race and I can see a similar outcome here. Robert Eddery’s four-year-old has placed in all three previous course outings and is worth an each-way punt.
6.25 Lingfield – LATONA (1pt win – 13/2 Paddy Power)
There’s a fair chance that LATONA will be declared a non-runner in this 7f classified contest because of her wide draw in stall 14 of 14 but if she does line up I want to be on. The three-year-old caught the eye when fifth of seven in a 6f Yarmouth handicap 79 days ago on her final start for Marco Botti, challenging on the slowest part of the track (far side) and keeping on over what was an inadequate trip. That form has worked out, with narrow runner-up Gorgeous Mr George (also on the wrong part of the track) winning three times since and the third/fourth placing in all their subsequent runs. She’s joined Mick Appleby who has a great record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, scoring with 108 of the 620 qualifiers (17.4% strike-rate) since 2010 for a profit of £321.52 to a £1 level stake at SP. Her new trainer also does well when fitting a first-time hood on a filly or mare (nine from 51, +£134.50), including two from six (+£17.00) with those making their yard debut.
