3.00 Goodwood – CAIUS CHORSITER (1.5pt win – 100/30 bet365, William Hill)
CAIUS CHORSITER was too keen for her own good when I put her up as a bet in the Ascot Gold Cup and she could only finish a 21-length sixth of nine to Kyprios. That was a respectable effort in the circumstances and the combination of drop in trip, taking on her own sex (for the first time since her Group 3 win at Saint-Cloud last autumn) and return to Goodwood (she won at this meeting in 2022) can revitalise her.
3.35 Goodwood – BILLYJOH (1pt ew – 14/1 Ladbrokes, 12/1 bet365)
Mick Appleby is having a fantastic week at Goodwood and BILLYJOH, runner-up in a 7f handicap here on Wednesday, can reward each-way support in the Stewards’ Cup. The four-year-old, who is wearing cheekpieces for the first time, is fully effective over this 6f trip granted a strong gallop and I like his draw in stall 4 as there’s pace around him from Rhythm N Hooves (stall 1) and Lethal Levi (stall 8). He’s arguably best on the all-weather but has finished in the first four in 12 of his last 14 starts and clocked a fast time for Wednesday’s runner-up effort.
4.10 Goodwood – QIRAT (1.5pt win, 9/2 William Hill) & SERRIED RANKS (0.5pt win – 16/1 bet365, William Hill)
QIRAT has struggled to see out the 1m trip at Royal Ascot and Newmarket the last twice and is best judged on May’s course and distance win where he had our pick Al Shabab Storm back in second. The runner-up is unbeaten in two subsequent outings and the third, Blue Prince, won well from Billyjoh here on Wednesday. Sixth-placed Validated win by over four lengths when 5-1 for a Newmarket handicap on his next start and the form looks solid.
SERRIED RANKS, a stablemate of Qirat, looks worth a saver now that the blinkers go on for the first time. Ralph Beckett has a fine record when using this headgear, sending out 32 winners from 164 runners (19.5% strike-rate) since the beginning of 2016 for a profit of £98.10 to a £1 level stake at SP. This week’s qualifiers have recorded form figures of 1221 (2-4), with the latest winner at 11-1.
7.55 Windsor – LAWN RANGER (1.5pt win – 7/1 bet365)
LAWN RANGER peaks in the month of August, recording form figures of 4351113813 (4-10) for a profit of £24.90 to a £1 level stake at SP. Mick Attwater’s veteran landed a big punt for this column when successful over 1m2f here at about this time last year (10-11 from 7-2) and while he’s yet to win over tonight’s extended 1m3f trip, he looks set to get loose on the lead and is worth supporting to last home.
