1.30 Newmarket – KARMOLOGY (1pt ew – 10/1 bet365 and Betfred, both paying four places)
KARMOLOGY was heavily backed ahead of her run in a 1m2f Listed contest at Yarmouth last month but trailed home in ninth place after failing to get competitive from her very wide draw (stall 13 of 14 once adjusted for the non-runners). She returns to handicap company for the first time since July’s York win and horses at the head of the weight have done well in this 1m2f fillies’ handicap, with the top two in the weights responsible for four of the eight winners. Genuinely soft or heavy going would be a concern, but it’s currently described as good to soft, soft in places, with no rain forecast and it should be quick enough for her come post time. Her low draw (stall 2 of 12) could also prove helpful as the stalls are far side and she’ll be close to the rail.

2.25 Ascot – AL QAREEM (1pt win – 11/4 William Hill, 5/2 generally)
AL QAREEM won this 1m4f contest 12 months ago and can usually be relied upon to run his race in the autumn, especially when the mud’s flying. Karl Burke’s five-year-old returned to winning ways at Chester last month to take his turf record from September to November to 151121 (4-6), with the fifth place in Group 1 company at Longchamp. He won well at Chester last time and can follow up before a crack at the Long Distance Cup back here on Champions Day in two weeks time.
4.45 Ascot – DREAM COMPOSER (1pt win – 12/1 bet365) & WOOLHAMPTON (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)
DREAM COMPOSER couldn’t improve on last year’s 12th place in the Portland at Doncaster last month, this time coming home 17th of the 22 runners at odds of 25-1. This was no great surprise given his clear preference for undulating tracks highlighted by trainer James Evans (quoted in the Racing Post) after the gelding’s win at Epsom on Derby Day this year – “He’s pretty good at going up and down dale, because he’s won at Goodwood and places like that.” The six-year-old scored at Kempton back in June 2021 but his other nine wins have all come on turf tracks described as stiff and/or undulating, namely Carlisle, Pontefract (twice), Goodwood (twice), Ascot, Newmarket, Sandown and Epsom. He won this race two years ago and, with the stalls on the stands’ side, looks nicely drawn in stall 12 of 12.
WOOLHAMPTON could never get competitive in the Portland, finishing 12th of 22 after a slow start, but the ground was faster than preferred and, like Dream Composer, she’ll be much happier back at Ascot. Rod Millman’s four-year-old has course form of 1321661 (3-7), with both unplaced efforts by just a length and a half in big fields (13 and 17 ran) and her 5f Ascot record improves to 111 (3-3) on good to soft or softer going.
5.00 Newmarket – RAHEENA (1pt win – 3/1 bet365)
RAHEENA showed promise without winning on turf before getting off the mark in a 7f fillies’ novice contest at Kempton in mid-August. She followed that with a 1m handicap win at Southwell, scoring more snugly than the narrow winning margin suggested, and the daughter of Night Of Thunder won’t have a problem with slow turf on breeding. Stall 1 – against the far rail – could be an advantage and she can be backed to complete her hat-trick.
