1.35 ASCOT – AKKADIAN THUNDER (0.5pt ew – 33/1 generally)

I can still make a case for my Weekend Watch pick The Wizard Of Eye despite very soft ground but his chance is covered in prices of around 5-1, as is that of mud-lover Rebel Territory, who ran a promising race on his return from a long break at Goodwood when I put him up as a bet. More interesting, and at a much bigger price, is David O’Meara’s AKKADAIN THUNDER. The son of Night Of Thunder is bred to appreciate the deep ground and is open to improvement on just his third turf start. His other turf runs produced a 22-1 second over a straight 1m at Redcar when best of the closers and best of those drawn high and a 6-1 win at Doncaster over today’s 7f trip. Stall 1 makes life tricky, but he can be tucked in behind runners and will hopefully settle better than he did at Newcastle last time.

13:35 bet365 Handicap

3.15 Kempton – TALIS EVOLVERE (2pt win – 11/1 Betfair,BetVictor, Paddy Power) & HIERONYMUS (0.5pt ew – 28/1 generally)

TALIS EVOLVERE was a big eyecatcher when a 22-1 third of 21 in the Spring Cup at Newbury back in April, doing best of the prominent racers when it paid to come from off the pace. Richard Hannon’s four-year-old has failed to score in five subsequent starts on turf but he’s three from eight on the all-weather (compared to just one from nine on grass) and the return to synthetics can spark a revival. He finished second and first from two runs over course and distance last winter and was a 33-1 winner at Newcastle on his latest all-weather assignment, clocking a fast time in the process.

There’s not a huge amount of early pace in this 1m handicap despite the big field and I can’t resist a saver on habitual front-runner HIERONYMUS, a 22-race maiden on turf but four from 23 on sand. Those four wins all came at Kempton and Nicola Currie gets on well with him.

15:15 Unibet London Mile Series Final Handicap (Series Final – Qualified Horses Only)

4.20 Kempton – FERROUS (2pt win – 9/2 William Hill)

FERROUS tends to perform best in spring/autumn and if we ignore his runs in high summer (June to August) his record becomes 312631113 (4-9) for a profit of £8.96 to a £1 level stake at SP. On the all-weather only his figures are 211 (2-3), with the defeat by a nose on Tapeta. His sole Polytrack run saw him bolt up over course and distance in April and he looks well drawn in stall 2.

16:20 Unibet London Sprint Series Final Handicap (Series Final – Qualified Horses Only)

5.05 Ascot – GOOD EARTH (1pt win – 10/1 William Hill) & MISS ATTITUDE (1pt win – 14/1 William Hill)

GOOD EARTH did us a good turn when recording a 7-1 victory at Sandown last week, confirming his liking for a stiff 5f. The seven-year-old’s last five wins have come at Beverley, Newmarket and Sandown, all tracks with stiff uphill finishes, and though yet to race at Ascot the track should suit. Heavy ground is a question mark, but he’s won twice on soft ground and is worth supporting again.

Progeny of the sire Cityscape usually perform well in the mud and it’s slightly surprising that Jack Channon’s MISS ATTITUDE has only encountered soft or heavy going once in her 14-race career. That was when failing to stay 6f at Goodwood back in 2022 and she might appreciate it now getting it for the first time over her optimum 5f trip. The four-year-old was only eighth of 14 at York last time but that was in a hot 5f fillies’ handicap, and she had little chance from her stall 12 draw.
