2.10 Ascot – DANCING IN PARIS (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
Connections of DANCING IN PARIS got the tactics wrong when the Ian Williams-trained five-year-old was favourite for a 1m6f heritage handicap at Newmarket last month, doing too much too soon and helping to set the race up for stablemate Oneforthegutter, and the switch to a patient ride proved his undoing when runner-up to the progressive Sam Hawkens in the Coral Summer Handicap at Glorious Goodwood. The steady early pace played into the hands of those ridden prominently and the half-length runner-up came home more than four lengths clear of the next hold-up horse to cross the line – fifth-placed Artistic Star. He’ll probably struggle to get into the Ebor but will be an each-way player if he does. This race looks his for the taking.
3.20 Ascot – FRANCISCO’S PIECE (0.5pt e/w – 22/1 Coral, Ladbrokes, 20/1 generally)
In the past ten renewals of the Shergar Cup Spring backing the two highest-drawn runners would have found six winners from 20 bets for a profit of £23.75 to a £1 level stake at SP. Three of the beaten horses finished second and FRANCISCO’S PIECE, drawn top of the shop in stall 10 of 10 (non-runner adjusted) doesn’t deserve to be the outsider of the field after an eye-catching effort in mid-division at York. Adrian Keatley’s three-year-old was only tenth of 19 that day but the 50-1 shot was poorly drawn in stall 14 and the best-of-the-high-draws sixth – 20-1 poke Strike Red (stall 17) ran second in the Stewards’ Cup next time. The Mayson colt needs to prove his effectiveness on fast ground but there’s compensation in the price.
4.30 Ascot – ARISAIG (1pt win – 9-1 Coral, 8/1 generally) & URBAN LION (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
ARISAIG has only raced right-handed on four occasions, winning at Kempton/Goodwood, finishing a close-up fifth at Goodwood after repeatedly finding trouble in running and finish an 18-1 second to Classic at Sandown in a race that has been boosted by the winner’s subsequent narrow second to Two Tribes (winner again since) in the International Stakes at Ascot. Charlie Johnston’s four-year-old has the patient style that is so effective in this round mile and looks over-priced.
URBAN LION has a great record when fresh, landing all three starts when rested for at least 50 days since his latest outing. Jack Channon’s four-year-old has been rested for 52 days since his solid 25-1 fifth of 30 in the Royal Hunt Cup, doing third best of his group, and looks set to go well.
