4.30 Leicester – HOSTELRY (1pt win – 9/2 bet365, 888sport, 4/1 generally)
This year, Ruth Carr has a ten from 39 record with last time out winners for a profit of £46.13 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 5.23, A/E = 1.91) and HOSTELRY, successful at Carlisle six days ago, is taken to follow up. The consistent veteran is three from nine following a win (+£7.25) and though yet to race her, her last four wins have come on stiff right-handed tracks (Beverley, Carlisle and twice at Hamilton).
5.15 Haydock – REIGNING PROFIT (1pt e/w – 7/1 bet365, five places, 13/2 Paddy Power, Sky Bet, both also paying five places)
The big field and likely strong pace is the ideal set up for Ruth Carr’s REIGNING PROFIT and the six-year-old can be forgiven his 14th of 20 at Glorious Goodwood where his patient running style was at a huge disadvantage in Brazen Bolt’s race. The patiently ridden sixth and 12th from that 5f Class 2 handicap have run well since and Reigning Profit drops to Class 4 level today. He’s won eight of his 30 starts at today’s trip when returned to the track within 14 days of his previous start (+£4.96 to a £1 level stake at SP), improving to eight from 23 in Class 4 or lower company (+£11.96). A stiffer track would have been ideal – he loves Pontefract – but his wins at Ripon/Wolverhampton suggest that today’s easier track won’t be an issue.

The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
