3.15 Ludlow – IMPERIAL JADE (1pt win – 5/2 generally)
The Henry Daly-trained REGAL RENAISSANCE is owned by Ludlow Racing Partnership so obviously runs at the Shropshire venue when possible. She won twice here over hurdles back in 2023 but has been beaten on her last eight course visits and is 0-4 here over fences. The seven-year-old is also 0-9 on officially good or faster going and today’s ground is described as good, good to firm in places. I’d rather side with front-runner IMPERIAL JADE, who looks set to receive an easy lead in this four-runner line-up. Charlie Longsdon’s mare seems best in the spring, recording form figures in March to May of 10612 (2-5), with the latest defeat by a short head. She’s yet to run over fences but her trainer has a good record when pitching one straight into handicap company on their debut over fences, scoring with 18 of the 111 qualifiers since the beginning of 2017 for a profit of £14.50 to a £1 level stake at SP.
6.45 Newcastle – SERGEANT WILKO (1pt win – 16/1 generally)
The wind is forecast to be behind the runners in the straight at Newcastle today and with very little in the way of opposition for the early lead front-runner SERGEANT WILKO can make all. Kevin Ryan’s four-year-old was most progressive last year, scoring over course and distance by four lengths on his comeback before recording a trio of turf wins on easy ground. He bombed out at Leicester on last month’s reappearance (his first start since a gelding operation) but made the running on the stands’ rail – rarely the place to be – and was eased down after meeting with interference to exaggerate the margin of defeat.

Andrew’s Angles – How to Make the Best of Racing in May
One recurring theme in the hugely entertaining Barstewards Enquiry podcast concerns trainer Charles Hills and how his runners tend to go off the boil from the end of June. I thought I’d used this week’s column to check this out and to look for other trainers whose runners typically perform well in the first half…
