1.45 Cheltenham – JIG’S FORGE (2pt win – 9/4 general)

Since this novice chase became a limited handicap in 2022, two of the three winners made all and the other front-runner finished second. JIG’S FORGE, trained by bang in-form Ben Pauling, made all in a soft-ground maiden hurdle on his reappearance at this time last year and this point-to-point winner could prove hard to pass on his debut over regulation fences. The six-year-old was only seventh at Perth in April when we last saw him but that was when 14-1 for a Listed novices’ hurdle won by Willie Millons’ Kiss Will and the time was fast (according to Proform’s speed figures).

2.20 Cheltenham – DR T J ECKLEBURG (1pt win – 12/1 Ladbrokes, Coral, BetVictor)

Those aged nine or older are 0-29 in the past ten renewals of this 2m handicap chase and the top four in the betting – TRIPLE TRADE, BALLYBREEZE, CABHFUILFUNGI and GLENGOULY – are all nine-year-olds. Eight of the last ten winners had finished fifth or worse on their latest outing and mud-lover DR T J ECKLEBURG, a winner second time out last term, will come on for last month’s course and distance 40-1 sixth to Calico in a better race. Evan Williams runners are in decent form after a slow start to the season and the seven-year-old looks overpriced.

3.30 Cheltenham – TANGANYIKA (1.5pt win – 100/30 generally)

Venetia Williams’ TANGANYIKA was most progressive when switched to fences last term, starting off with a fifth of 15 to Jagwar and Lowry’s Bar (now rated 25lb and 18lb higher respectively) over an inadequate 2m4.5f trip in a hot handicap at Bangor in November and extinguishing the memory of December’s Windsor flop with wins at Market Rasen and Carlisle in February, despite jumping persistently out to his left in the second of those runs. He signed off with a fine one-lengths 14-1 second to Mr Vango in the Midlands National and today’s deep ground and extended 3m3 trip will be perfect for him.
