3.55 Navan – MY MATE ALFIE (1pt win – 11/1 bet365, 9/1 William Hill)

I wrote the following about MY MATE ALFIE after his run at the Curragh on September 23rd last year…

MY MATE ALFIE had no answer to the hugely impressive One Look in the Goffs Million but the 8-1 shot picked up over 117,000euros for his third of 23, just a neck behind runner-up Cherry Blossom, the even-money favourite. A winner on good ground at Down Royal in July, the son of Dark Angel coped well with the yielding to soft going but could have more to offer on a quicker surface.’

…his next three runs (fifth, fourth and third) took places on soft or heavy going but he took a big step forward on officially good/yielding ground in Listed company over 6f at Navan last time, running third by a length and a half. He was drawn wider than the pair that beat him that day (first three drawn 2, 3 and 7) and, while he has work to do to reverse the form with runner-up Givemethebeatboys over the same course and distance this afternoon, he’s almost four times the price of that rival and looks worth a punt.

5.15 Newmarket – FLYING SECRET (1pt win – 17/2 Coral, Paddy Power, Betfair, 8/1 generally)

FLYING SECRET was only sixth of 12 in a good-ground 7f handicap at Ascot on his final start last term but that was a fine effort given the draw bias. The first three home came from stalls 9, 11 and 12 and raced on the stands’ side rail whereas Eve Johnson-Houghton’s son of Showcasing raced down the centre on the slowest going. He fared second best of his flank by just a short head, and he would have needed his comeback outing when a respectable 20-1 fourth of 12 at Southwell last month. He scored over a straight 7f at Yarmouth on his second run last term and also ran well on his second outing in 2022, running second in a 6f Doncaster maiden.
