2.18 Redcar – SHALADAR (1pt e/w – 7/1 bet365)
SHALADAR isn’t the most prolific (three wins from 40 starts) but is very consistent with cut in the ground, especially when given a strong pace to chase. Apprentice handicaps often feature a strong gallop, as the inexperienced jockeys go too quick in the early stages, and the only time Shaladar ran in one of these previously he won at Ayr (albeit back in September 2022). The six-year-old has been dropped 3lb to a mark of 68 since his modest fourth of seven on unsuitably fast ground in a Class 4 handicap at Leicester in late May, doing best of the closers. The the patiently-ridden 100-1 fifth in that Leicester contest, Most Wanted was a 12-1 scorer at Leicester two runs later, and Shaladar drops to Class 5 level today.
3.40 Curragh – ROOM SERVICE (1pt e/w – 11/2 bet365)
Kevin Ryan’s ROOM SERVICE has been crying out for slow ground and finally gets some after catching the eye on unsuitably fast going so far this term. The Kodi Bear colt ran a cracker in the Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock on his belated reappearance, keeping on into a 28-1 fourth and doing second best of the closers, and was also best of those to come from off the pace when runner-up to Quinault at York last time. His last three runs on ground with the word “soft” in the going description produced two wins and a second of 21 and he looks set to run a big race.
