5.37 Redcar – BULLDOG SPIRIT (1.5pt win – 7/2 bet365, 100/30 William Hill)
Having done too much too soon and contributed to a pace collapse in a 1m3f handicap at Hamilton in early June – a race that threw up a host of subsequent winners and good performances – I had expected BULLDOG SPIRIT to race prominently at Chester next time. However, the step back up to 2m resulted in a switch to patient tactics and the four-year-old never got into the race, coming home four lengths back in fifth at odds of 15-2. He raced keenly under restraint when a 14-1 sixth of 14 in another 2m handicap at York last time, finding less than looked likely after travelling strongly two furlongs out. Today’s cut back to 1m6f will suit, as will the drop to Class 5 level.
