2.43 Hamilton – GISELLES IZZY (1pt win – 11/2 generally)
With the wind behind them on a track that typically favours early pace, Carlisle’s meeting 12 days ago was a front-runners’ benefit, with the winners described by the Racing Post as “made all”, “made all”, “towards rear”, “pressed leaders”, “raced in second”, “pressed leaders” and “made all”. The exception to the always prominent rule was Iain Jardine’s GISELLES IZZY, who arrived late to land the 6f handicap. The runner-up, third and fourth were on the front end throughout and this was a useful effort in the circumstances. The six-year-old had caught the eye when best of the closers at Ayr/Hamilton on her last two starts and was breaking her Carlisle duck at the seventh attempt. Unusually for a multiple-winning filly, all seven of her career wins have come against the boys and she has failed to register a single success against her own sex, probably because the stronger pace in open company plays to her strengths. She has a good record when returned to the track quickly, should get a good pace at run at in this big field and looks well drawn. The presence of an inexperienced 7lb claimer is the downside but there’s compensation in the current price and she could drift further.
4.43 Hamilton – IMPRESSOR (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
Mud-lover IMPRESSOR caught the eye when a 33-1 fifth of nine on unsuitably fast ground at Haydock three runs back (July 18th) and conditions again weren’t ideal when down the field at 80-1 at York a week later. Phil Makin’s eight-year-old bounced back with a 66-1 third of 15 (beaten by one length) at Doncaster earlier this month and this dual course winner has his ground conditions for the first time this season. He’s 1lb lower than for his soft-ground Redcar win last October and he drops back down from Class 4 to Class 5 level.
5.07 Southwell – SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE (1pt e/w – 11/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
There was a strong draw bias in the 5f Class 4 Beverley handicap won by Smart Vision (stall 1) on August 24th and fifth-placed SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE (stall 10), wearing blinkers for the first time, caught the eye in doing best of the high draws and second best of the closers. This drop to Class 5 level looks ideal given his form figures in this company of 1511321 (4-7) and he’s fully effective on Tapeta, recording form figures of 3212536 (1-7). The win came off a mark of 74. The latest third place off 81 and he runs off just 66 today.
