1.15 Galway – GENTLEMAN BILL (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
GENTLEMAN BILL won on his bumper debut in April 2024 and though only third at Carlisle on his hurdles debut last October, he took the ‘swamp’ route on the inside rail, and it was a useful effort in the circumstances. He went two places better at Bangor next time and doubled up on his handicap hurdle debut at Doncaster. The Olliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero-trained seven-year-old was unlucky to bump into Willie Mullins’ Jarrive De Mee (now rated 137) at Catterick next time where he again raced on the slowest part of the track towards the inside rail. He ended the season on a low with comprehensive defeats in the Morebattle at Kelso and another Class 2 handicap hurdle at Bangor but early season might be when to catch him and this point-to-point winner is worth a punt on his reappearance/Rules chase debut. Since racing resumed after lockdown in June 2020 his yard is 22 from 102 with handicap chase debutants switching from hurdles for a profit of £13.75 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£47.76 at Betfair SP after 2% commission) and the expected number of winners from the qualifiers was only 13.12 (A/E = 1.68).
1.25 Galway – OSCARS BROTHER (1pt win – 3/1 generally)
O’MOORE PARK heads the betting for this beginners’ chase despite having won just a Fairyhouse maiden hurdle from 12 starts under Rules. Willie Mullins’ eight-year-old has also shown a strong preference for left-handed tracks, often jumping markedly out to his left, especially since switched to fences – his four runs right-handed over the larger obstacles returned form figures of FF40 (0-4). Take him on with OSCARS BROTHER, a huge eyecatcher from off the pace when a 25-1 runner-up in a Cork maiden hurdle on his Rules debut in January of last year. He got off the mark in the mud at Limerick two runs later and added a Cork Listed hurdle on his second start last term before narrowly failing to follow up in Listed handicap hurdle at Navan. Connor King’s seven-year-old has finished second in both previous chase starts, doing best of the closers on ground a shade quicker than ideal at Listowel last time. Forecast players might want to play him with Henry De Bromhead’s GOOD N’ KIND.
